Welcome…

If you have made it through the tangled world of the web to this site The Ship Bombay… It is in most probability for either of two reasons…

You were searching for a ferry or shipping timetable in Mumbai (Formally Bombay), in which case sadly this website will only disappoint…

OR

You have or suspect of having a ancestor that travelled on a ship called Bombay that embarked from London Docks on the 23rd of November 1864 to bring 400 odd pioneers and settlers to New Zealand, which means I am pleased to say that you have successfully googled the 40 trillion gigabits on the net to reach the correct location.

Summary.

In summary this Website is concerned with the 1864/65 voyage of the Bombay to Auckland (it should be noted the ship had made several trips previously) and the passengers it transported.

Sections of this site will investigate:

Details of the ship itself; Who built the ship, what did it look like, who was the owner, what was the ships history.

The Crew; Researching as much as possible the Captain and crew of the ship, who they were and what happened to them.

The voyage; Collating the different accounts of the epic voyage from London to Auckland, and its misfortune of hitting a hurricane and being demasted, left to wallow in heavy seas before being thankfully rescued.

The passengers; Investigating the passenger list to find who the settlers were, where were they from and why did they leave all they knew and owned to travel to a far flung colony in the south seas.

What happened next; Troving through history as the passengers settled in dense bush to the south of Auckland and built a settlement named in honour of the ship that so bravely bore them… Bombay.

Objectives.

To make all this time, money and effort worthwhile this site has the following objectives:

To provide a resource for descendants to be be able to research and remember there forbears who sacrificed and suffered so much for our future prosperity.

To provide a central point where descendants can link and stay connected, hopefully sharing stories, family trees, photos or memorabilia.

To reintroduce and reinvigorate the March 18th festivities the pioneers celebrated annually to remember the arrival into Auckland and those early years of struggle and adversity where neighbours and community relied on each other.

To edit and format the gathered information with the goal to publish a book so families forever have a record and keepsake.
