The Bombay

A Historical Fiction account of the voyage of the Bombay

It was a cold winters day on November 22nd 1864, when four hundred odd passengers arrived at London Docks, and boarded the ship Bombay for the the long trip to Auckland, New Zealand.

One of those passengers was David Burnie Allison.

Aged 26 at time of registration for the voyage of the Bombay, David was born on the 11th of June 1838 at Penninghame, which is located in what was then Wigtownshire in South-West Scotland.

David’s father Samuel was from Ireland, his mother Isabella McLauchlan was a local from Wigtown, just a few mile away from Penninghame. they lived and died on a farm called Barskeoch, David was named after the farm’s owner. Penninghame is an old Anglo-Saxon place-name derived possibly from the Old English Pening-Ham meaning farm on which a penny geld was payable.

Davids mother died in May 1858, and his father in November 1861, leaving behind at least nine children, David being the youngest.

David married Helen Paterson, in 1864 in York England on their way to London and travelling on the Bombay. They will settle in Bombay to farm. David was Steward of the Bombay Methodist Church and played a active role in local affairs.

David died 15 February 1919 at the residence of his daughter Annie in Glenbrook, South Auckland.
