William Caie was aged 26 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. William was born in Nigg, Kincardineshire, Scotland in 1838 to Ann Walker and John Caie. William married Jessie Paterson in York, England on 25th of June,1863. On the Marriage Certificate William’s occupation was listed as a Tea Dealer.

The family settled in Bombay as part of Waikato Immigration scheme and acquired 30 acres of land. William will go on to work for the Paparata Road Board and will reach 90 years old before dying in Bombay on the 15th of May,1927.

Jessie Caie (Maiden name Paterson) was aged 28 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Jessie was born on the 1st of October,1834 in Newton Stuart, Scotland to Samuel and Helen Paterson. Jessie is the sister of fellow Bombay passenger Helen Allison. Like her sister, Jessie and William got married in York.

Jessie voted in the 1893 General election, making her one of the first women in the world to vote, she died on the 11th of December,1909 and she is buried with her husband in the cemetery of the Bombay Presbyterian Church.

Jessie Evans. Jessie was born on the 15th of October,1870 and married William Evans on the 2nd of September,1903. William was the nephew of Bombay passengers Henry and James. William’s parents Emma Suter and William Snr had travelled later on the ship Percy, arriving into Auckland on the 30th of December,1865.

Catherine Shaw. Catherine was born in 1873 and married James Francis William Shaw.

Samuel Paterson Caie. Samuel was born in 1876 and will marry Agnes Isabel French in 1905.

Helen Annie Caie was aged 3 months old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Helen was born in York, England in 1864, just a few months before embarking on the Bombay and sailing to New Zealand, a daunting prospect with a young baby.

Helen will survive the ordeal and marry fellow Bombay passenger Herbert James Flay, who was only one years old on the voyage. Helen died on the 30th of July,1904, just a few months after giving birth to Laura. Helen is buried at St Peter’s in The Forest, Bombay.

Jessie May Vince. Jessie was born on the 9th of July,1886 and will marry Ernest Edward Vince in 1907. Ernest is the son of Bombay passengers Jane Prior and William Vince.

Violet Helen Flay. Violet was born on the 5th December,1888, but died on the 17th of June,1898.

Winifred Catherine Townsend. Winifred was born on the 4th of May, 1891 and will marry James Townsend in 1912.

Ivy Emily Flay. Ivy was born in 1894 but died on the 4th of October, 1916.

Ruby Alberta McGill. Ruby was born on the 9th of November,1899 and married Alan McGill in 1920.

James Herbert William Flay. James was born on the 15th of October, 1901, and married Greta May Mathie in 1923.

Laura Eveline McCarthy. Laura was born on the 4th of December 1903, she first married Basil McCarthy in 1923 then later John Robert Mcllwaine.

Charles Cantell was aged 25 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Charles was born in Hayes, England on the 26th of March,1839 to Richard Cantell and Sarah Allum. Charles married Susannah Wooderson at Saint George’s Church, in Bloomsbury, London on the 10th of October 1859, and in the 1861 Census were living at 53 James Street, Covent Garden, where Charles was working as a Porter.

Charles and family did not stay long in New Zealand, moving to Australia, then back to New Zealand to Thames, most likely gold prospecting. Charles’s brother Richard with wife and child also left London for New Zealand, arriving on February the 9th,1873, aboard the Warwick.

Charles died on the 4th of September,1893 at his daughters residence in Pitt Street, Auckland, New Zealand and is buried at Symonds Street Cemetery.

Susannah Cantell (Maiden name Wooderson) was aged 24 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Susannah was born on the 14th of October,1840 at 20 Stafford Street, Marylebone, London. Her parents were Henry and Susannah Wooderson who also travelled on the Bombay with her siblings.

Susannah died in Auckland, New Zealand on the 3rd of September 1894, just a year after her husband, she is buried with her husband in Symonds Street Cemetery.

Henry James Cantell. Henry was born on the 21st of August,1862, but sadly died nine days later.

Susannah McLeod. Susannah was born on the 31st of January, 1868 in King St, Newcastle, Australia. Susannah first married James McLeod on the 28th of April,1886, and when he died, she remarried Herbert Bertram Wade on the 5th of August,1895.

Robert Alfred Cantell. Robert was born on the 22nd of March,1870, in Thames, and married Mary Agnes Tomson on the 13th of August, 1895.

William Henry Cantell. William was born in 1872 and will marry Annie Rose Mcleod on the 2nd of August,1893.

Alice Maud Kennedy. Alice was born on the 28th of March,1874 and married Daniel Kennedy in 1892.

Fredrick Arthur Cantell. Fredrick was born in 1876 and married Mary Jane Wishart on the 11th of May,1904.

May Henrietta Cantell. May was born in 1878 but lived just ten weeks.

Charles James Cantell was aged 4 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Charles was born in 1859 in Shoeburyness, Essex, England. Charles will go on to become a drain-layer and marry a Welsh girl from Pontyprid named Mary Agnes Hickey.

Mary was born on the 15th of March,1868 to Mary Dwyer and coal miner John Hickey. Charles and Mary lived at 26 Reimer’s Avenue, Mount Roskill, Auckland.

Mary died on the 15th of January, 1943, and Charles shortly after on the 1st of May,1943.

Charles and Mary’s known children are:

Mabel Martha Cantell. Mabel was born on the 10th of April,1889. It is not thought Mabel married. She worked as a machinist and died at 45 William Denny Avenue, in Westmere, on the 9th of April,1977.

Arnold Charles Cantell. Arnold was born on the 13th of April,1891, Arnold was a good footballer and played for Auckland’s Everton FC, he will serve in WW1 as a Sargent, in the 6th (Howitzer) Battery, New Zealand Artillery, but will be killed on the 4th October,1916, his body was buried in Flatiron Copse Cemetery, Mametz.

Norman Mathew Cantell. Norman was born on the 30th of October, 1893 and will marry Edith Caroline Marie Ellis in 1937.

Edwin Victor Cantell. Edwin was born in August, 1895 and worked as a French Polisher, like his older brother Edwin will also go and serve in World War One as a Private in the NZEF Auckland Regiment, 1st Battalion, including being at Gallipoli, but also like his brother he will not return, he died on the 4th of October,1917 from wounds. Edwin is buried in Brandhoek Cemetery, Belgium.

Leonard Joseph Cantell. Leonard was born on the 11th of Febuary, 1903 and will marry Evelyn Winifred Katinka Brown in 1929. When elder sister Mabel died in 1977, without children, Leonard and Norman will fight over who will be executor of the will. (Sourced from Archway: Record No: R13078516)

Henry Carter was aged 23 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Henry was born in Meshaw, Devon, England on the 7th of March,1841 to William Carter and Elizabeth Adams. Henry married Mary Bragg on the 17th of October,1864 in South Molten, Devon shortly before heading to London, and sailing on the Bombay.

Henry’s young brother and family Jacob Carter also came to Bombay on the ship Durham in 1873.

Henry died on the 24th of April,1919, and is buried at St Peter’s Anglican Church, Bombay

Mary Ann Stone Carter (Maiden name Bragg) was aged 22 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Mary was born in Chawley, Devon, England, to John Bragg and Eliza Jane Stone in 1843.

Mary died on the 2nd of April,1910 at her late residence of Laurel Farm, Bombay, after a lingering illness, and is buried at St Peter’s Anglican Church, Bombay .

Henry and Mary’s known children are:

Phedora Grace Bragg Carter. Phedora was born in 1862, and Christened on the 4th of May, 1862. Phedora died during the voyage of the Bombay.

Eliza Jane Bragg Powell. Eliza was born on the 4th of January,1864, and married George Powell on the 23rd of September,1884.

William Bragg Carter. William was born on the 17th of September 1866, and married Kate Emma Sawyer on the 20th of November, 1890. Kate’s parents and siblings had also traveled on the Bombay.

Bessie Carter. Bessie was born on the 24th of May,1868 and married a cousin Samuel Carter on the 31st of December,1890.

John Carter. John or Jack as he was known was born in 1870 and married Martha May MclIroy on the 7th of March,1900.

Emily Ann Fowler. Emily was born on the 17th of July,1873 and married Fredrick George Fowler on the 15th of November,1893.

Mary-Ann Carter. Mary-Ann, also known as just Mary, was born on the 13th of October,1876. Mary lived to 1939. Mary did not marry.

Samuel Harold Carter. Samuel was born on the 16th of November, 1882 and married Leila May French in 1910.

George Carter. George was born on the 17th of April,1885 and married Sarah Farrar on the 15th of March,1911.

Phedora Grace Bragg Carter was aged 2 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Pheodora did not survive the voyage, dying on the 15th of December, 1864 near Latitude 40.0 Longitude 15.0 from suffocation of the lungs. She was buried at sea with the service lead by the ships Surgeon at four thirty in the afternoon.

Eliza Jane Bragg Carter was aged 4 Months old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Eliza was born on the 4th of January 1864, and married George Powell, in Saint Peters Church, Bombay, on the 23rd of September,1884, they will celebrate a Golden Wedding in 1934.

Interestingly George was born in Massachusetts, United States and went to Ireland as a infant, then leaving for NZ as a 21 year old on the ship Waitara.

John Ernest Powell. John was born on the 4th of March,1897 and married Doris Lucy Crellin Bell on the 19th of August,1919 then Alona Davies in 1928.

Edwin Clark was aged 26 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Edwin was born on the 25th of September,1842 in East London to James Clark and Louisa Foster. Edwin worked with Engines in London, but on arrival to Auckland the Clark family did not stay long, and by late 1866 had moved to Victoria, Australia. Edwin worked as a Engineer and his last residence was at 72 Herbert Street. Edwin died on the 24th of May,1914, in Melbourne, Australia.

Maria Louisa Clark (Maiden name Porter) was aged 26 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Maria was born on the 9th of November,1838 to Thomas William Porter and Elizabeth Ann Marshall in Rotherhithe, London.

Maria and Edwin married on the 26th of July, 1863 at Saint Mary’s in Lambeth, London.

Maria died on the 2nd of January,1936 in Brunswick, Melbourne.

Edwin Charles James Clark. Edwin was born on the 16th of April, 1864, but died soon after arriving to Auckland.

Edwin Clark. Edwin was born in Auckland on the 29th of June,1865 and married Clara Millgate on the 21st of May,1885.

William Joseph Clark. William was born on the 24th of December, 1866 in Victoria, Australia.

Alfred Thomas Clark. Alfred was born in 1868 but died on the 24th of May,1871.

Louisa Elizabeth Martha Boulton. Louisa was born in 1870 and married Christopher Boulton on the 9th of March,1904.

Charles Alexander Collings was aged 23 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Charles was born on the 15th of February,1842 in Shoreditch, London, England. Charles was the youngest of four children to Joseph Charles Fredrick Collings and Eliza Pleace Scanes.

Charles worked in jewelry in London according to the 1861 Census, and lived in Holborn, not far from Hatton Garden and the jewelry district of London. Charles had a interesting time in New Zealand, from prospecting for gold in Waihi, working as a farmer, storekeeper and on sailing ships in New Zealand waters and opening a butchers in 1890.

Charles married Sarah Elizabeth Smith on the 5th of June,1869 at his home on Cuba Street in Wellington. Sarah was born on the 10th of June,1849 in Nottingham, England, and was Baptized at St Barnabas Roman Catholic, Lenton on the 12th of November 1854. Sarah had arrived a few months before Charles on the ship Nelson. Sarah was of French extraction.

Charles died on the 1st of September,1931 in Matangi, Waikato, New Zealand, and Sarah on the 12th of Febuary,1935.

Amy Phoebe Gordon. Amy was born on the 27th of Febuary,1879 and married James Robert Gordon on the 6th of April,1904.

William Knowles Cornthwaite was aged 22 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. William was born in Brookhouse, Lancashire, England on the 29th of May,1842 to Christopher K Cornthwaite and Margret Burton. William worked for the local Municipal Government in England earning £1.1s a week. He will recall his interview for placement on the Waikato Immigration Scheme…”I had my interview in Liverpool at the Clarendon Rooms. The agent selecting those who would best combat the wildness, and we were we were to be a bulwark against the Maori’s and the town of Auckland.”

William settled in William’s Clearing, which was renamed Bombay after the ship, and married fellow Bombay passenger Alice Worden on the 5th of September,1865. William was Ensign with the Razorback Volunteers Militia and will serve on the Bombay School committee for almost 50 years, he also opened and managed the first hotel in Mercer (Near Bombay), and in later life be appointed Justice of the Peace. In 1888 William chaired the first meeting for the formation of the Bombay Rugby Club and elected its first president.

William Cornthwaite.

William will still be in Bombay for the 50th year anniversary of the settlers arrival when the Prime Minister RN Massey visited in 1915, William would state for the papers how ”On arrival in Auckland, we were taken to Onehunga barracks by drays, then boat to Drury, some taking 3 days to make the trip, then Drays, again to Williamson Clearing.” William would also say that 18 original settlers were still alive in Bombay in 1915.

William died on the 11th of December,1922 and is buried alongside his wife in St Peters Church, Bombay.

Thomas Curry was aged 46 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Thomas was born in 1818 in Fatfield, Harraton, Parish of Chester-le-Street, Sunderland, England, to William Curry and Sarah Tulip. Thomas’s village is situated on the North bank of the Wear, over which there is a ferry, also a number of staithes on the shore belonging to the adjacent collieries.

In 1708, 69 people were killed by an explosion in a coal mine near this village, and on the 28th of September,1813, 32 lives were lost at the Hall Pit in Fatfield, amongst the dead was George Curry aged 16 and John Curry aged 13. The Collieries were mainly worked out by about 1835.

By 1861 Thomas was a Over-Man at a Coal Mine living in Durham and had married Elizabeth Lockey. Thomas and the family stayed just 2 years in NZ then moved to Wallsend, New South Wales, Australia. Thomas again working in the mines as a Engine-Driver and becoming the Under-manager of Wallsend Collier. For several years he occupied a seat on the Wallsend Borough Council and was a active member of the Orangemen. Thomas died on the 6th of April 1877, in Wallsend from Apoplexy.

Elizabeth Margaret Sarah Curry (Maiden name Lockey) was aged 42 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Elizabeth was born on 27th of June,1821, in Fatfield, Durham, England, and christened on the 19th of June,1822 in Chester-le-Street, her parents were Thomas Lockey and Ann Carr.

Elizabeth and Thomas married on the 6th of July,1839 in Saint Johns the Baptist Church in Newcastle. Elizabeth died in February,1886 at Wallsend, Australia, and buried on the 12th.

William Curry. William was born in 1841, and married Mary Jane. William remained in Durham, England continuing working in the Coal Mines.

Ann Kellett. Ann was born in 1843, she did not travel with the family on the Bombay, but travelled at a later date. Ann married Robert Kellett on the 12th of August,1869 in Newcastle, Australia. Robert was born on the 9th of Febuary,1836 in Hetton-le-Hole, Durham, and was also a miner.

Thomas Curry. Thomas was born in 1844 and married Hannah Bousfield in 1870.

Mathew Curry. Mathew was born in 1846, and married Susannah Milgate on the 10th of April, 1869.

Sarah Curry. Sarah was born in 1848.

Robert Curry. Robert was born in 1851.

Hannah Mclachlan. Hannah was born in 1852 and married Allen Mclachlan on the 4th of November,1875.

Elizabeth Curry. Elizabeth was born in 1857 and married William Willis in 1875.

Hedley Curry. Hedley was born in 1859 and married Elizabeth Catherine Roberts on the 31st of December,1880.

Thomas Curry was aged 20 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Thomas was born in 1844 in Chester-le-Street and christened on the 16th of January,1844, like the rest of his family he resided in New Zealand for about 15 months, before settling in the then sparsely populated place of Wallsend, in Australia. Thomas married Hannah Bousfield in 1870.

Thomas was a sub-manager in the stores of the late Mr. W. W. Johnson for 23 years, and was secretary of the local agricultural society for a number of years. He was one of the finest auditors of the Wallsend Council which was formed 45 years ago, his co-auditor being Mr. A. Ross, at one time manager of the Wallsend Coal Company. Thomas then left Wallsend and settled at Carrlington, Australia where he was manager of the then cooperative society. While living there, he served a term as alderman. In later years, Mr. Curry was engaged as a draper in the establishment of ‘The Hustlers.’

Agnes Elizabeth Curry. Agnes was born in 1873, but died in 1875.

Albert Edward Frank Curry. Albert was born in 1880.

Mathew Curry was aged 19 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Mathew was born in 1846, in Chester-le-Street, Durham, England and christened on the 4th of February,1846 in the same location. Mathew married Susannah Milgate on the 10th of April,1869 in Newcastle, New South Wales.

Florence Maud Murnain. Florence was born on the 17th of November,1883 in Wallsend, Australia and married James Henry Murnain on the 20th of April,1904.

Lilly May Ritchie. Lilly was born on the 17th of November,1883, in Wallsend, Australia and married David Ritchie on the 21st of June,1905.

Mathew Curry. Mathew was born on the 14th of August,1887 in Wallsend, Australia, and married Annie Victoria Beatrice Ducker on the 11th of May,1911.

Sarah Curry was aged 16 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Sarah was born in 1848.

Robert Curry was aged 14 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Robert was born in 1851, but died on the 8th of May 1871.

Hannah Curry was aged 12 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Hannah was born in 1852 and had several marriages.

Hannah married married William James Thomas Tamsett on the 26th of June,1873, James died on the 1st of January,1874. Hannah then married Allan Mclachlan on the 4th of November,1875, when Allan died on the 13th of January,1878 Hannah then married Thomas Thompson.

William J Tamsett. William was born in 1874 and married Isabella Gray on the 28th of January,1903.

Elizabeth McLachlan. Elizabeth was born in 1876.

Hector Allan McLachlan. Hector was born in 1878.

Elizabeth Curry was aged 8 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Elizabeth married William Wills in 1875 in Wallsend.

Thomas Colin Wills. Thomas was born in 1876, and married Isabella B Perran in 1899.

John George Wills. John was born in 1881.

Alexander Wills. Alex was born in 1898.

Mary E Wills. Mary was born in 1900.

Hedley Curry was aged 6 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Hedley was born in 1859 in Chester-le-Street, Durham, England and married Elizabeth Catherine Roberts on the 31st of December,1880 in Wallsend, New South Wales, England. Elizabeth was also from Durham, born in 1859 in Kelloe, to Henry Roberts and Elizabeth Lowery.

Hedley and Elizabeth’s known children are:

Henry Roberts Curry. Henry was born on the 14th of May,1881 and married Mary Ann Leach on the 9th of December,1908.

Alma Maud Curry. Alma was born in 1883 and married Charles Philip Broughton in 1910.

Ethel May Erskine. Ethel was born in 1885 and married William Wilson Erskine on the 7th of October,1908, after his death in 1914, Ethel married Norman McDonald in 1916.

William Thomas Cuthbert was aged 27 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. William was born on the 3th of March,1836 in Ipswich, England and was a bricklayer by trade, he married Jean Hoare on the 25th of December,1859, in Horton Kirby, Kent, England.

In New Zealand William was granted 10 acres at Lot 92 at Opaheke, as part of the Waikato Immigration Scheme. William will carry on bricklaying to supplement his farming and also was a Sunday School teacher. William died on the 10th of July,1899 and was buried in St Peters Church in Bombay.  

Jean Mizella Cuthbert (Maiden name Hoare) was aged 27 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Jean was born on the 2nd of October,1835 in Horton Kirby, Dartford, Kent, England. The daughter of Francis Hoare and Mary Steffens. Jean came from a family of four brothers and three sisters.

Jean voted in the 1893 General Election, making her one of the first women in the world to vote, she died on August 17th,1923 and was buried in Dargaville, New Zealand. William and Jean had three children in England who died of smallpox.

William Charles Cuthbert. William was born in 1860, but died in 1863 from smallpox.

Alice Cuthbert. Alice was born on the 20th of September,1862, but died in 1864 from smallpox

Beatrice Jane Cuthbert. Beatrice was born in 1864. Beatrice died soon after arriving in Auckland.

George Cuthbert. George was born on the 3rd of June,1866. George married Susan McDonald. George drowned in 1925.

Francis James Cuthbert. Francis or Frank as he was known, was born on the 15th of August,1869 and married Ann Spilsbury. Ann died in the Flu Pandemic in 1918.

Alice Jane Carruthers. Alice was born on the 26th of April,1871 and married Joseph Carruthers on the 21st of June,1893 in Bombay.

Mildred Eliza Stephens. Mildred was born in Bombay on the 21st of October,1872 and married Fredrick Hugh Stephens on the 10th of June,1894 in Pukekohe.

William Cuthbert. William was born in Bombay on the 3rd of May, 1878, and married Hannah Spilsbury on the 10th of May,1903 in Bombay. Hannah is the sister of Ann Spilsbury.

Beatrice Cuthbert was aged 4 months old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Beatrice was christened on the 30th of October,1864 in Saint Mathew Church in Brixton, London. Beatrice survived the voyage, but died shortly after arriving into Auckland and is buried at Drury Cemetery.
