John Dalbeth was aged 25 years old at the time of registering for passage on the Bombay. John was born on the 17th of July,1840 in Glasgow, Scotland. John was a orphan, but was fortunate enough to be raised by the Neilson family in Tollcross, Glasgow, Scotland. At some stage John went to Dublin, Ireland where he met and married Harriet Wyse.

The Dalbeth family first lived in Onehunga, Auckland before moving down to Williamson Clearing, later named Bombay. John was a builder by trade, erecting some of the first cottages in Bombay, including the accommodation houses for the Armed Constabulary shortly after the Waikato War, he also ran the local store in Bombay. In 1888 the store burnt down and without insurance Mr Dalbeth lost about £40, a considerable sum. A year later they would sell the farm in Bombay and move to Rotorua.

After his wife died, John remarried in 1909 to Mary Davidson Ewen. John died on Milton Street, Hamilton, New Zealand on the 7th of April,1926.

Harriet Lucinda Dalbeth (Maiden name Wyse) was aged 24 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Harriet was born in Dublin, Ireland, where she met and married John on the 10th of May, 1861 at Saint Thomas’s Church.

Harriet died on the 14th of Febuary,1901 in in Rotorua, New Zealand.

Mary Dalbeth. Mary was born in 1862 in Liverpool, but died shortly after arriving to Auckland.

Harriet Dalbeth. Born in 1864 in Liverpool, but like Mary, also died shortly after arriving to Auckland.

Francis Edith McKee. Francis or Fanny was born on the 2nd of March 1866 in Onehunga. Francis married William John McKee on the 26th of December,1893 in Rotoura.

Colin Dalbeth. Colin was born in 1869 in Onehunga, and married Emma Evans on the 20th of March,1891. Emma is the daughter of William Evans, and the niece of William Evans who travelled on the Bombay.

Harriet Lucinda Hazlehurst. Harriet also known as Lucy, was born on the 15th of July,1871 and married Herbert John Hazlehurst in 1902.

Mary Dalbeth was aged 2 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Mary was born in 1862 in Liverpool, England, sadly she died shortly after arriving into Auckland, dying on the 6th of April,1865, in Onehunga, Auckland, New Zealand.  

Harriet Dalbeth was aged 7 month at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Harriet was born in 1864, in Liverpool, England, sadly like her elder sister, she died shortly after arriving into Auckland, on the 6th of April,1865 in Onehunga, Auckland, New Zealand. 

Herbert Day was aged 26 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Herbert was born in Norfolk, England in 1839. Allocated land as part of the Waikato Immigration Scheme, they would farm in the William’s Clearing, later renamed Bombay area, however In December 1899 the home they lived in, a 8 bedroom house will be burnt down, thankfully they had insurance of £150, and contents for £50.

Shortly afterwards Herbert and Sophie moved to Northland, New Zealand. Herbert died in 1919 and was buried alongside his wife in Rawene Cemetery, Northland, New Zealand.    

Sophie Fleur Day (Maiden name Meurice) was aged 28 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Sophie was born in 1837, in Calais, France, to Jaque Meurice and Sophie Hertau.

Sophie will vote in the 1893 General Election, making her one of the first women in the world to vote, she died in 1912 as is buried in Rawene Cemetery, Northland, New Zealand.

Herbert and Sophie’s only known child is:

Sophie Hannah Eyes. Sophie was born in 1863 in London, and married Charles Eyes in Bombay in 1888.

Sophie Hannah Day was aged 3 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Sophie was born in London, England, in 1863. Sophie married Charles Eyes in June 1888 in Bombay.

Charles was born on the 6th of May,1863 in Bushbury, Staffordshire. England, the eldest child of Amos Eyes and Sarah Ward. Amos worked in the Railways in Wolverhampton and met Sarah there. In November of the same year Charles with his family will depart to New Zealand on the ship Golden City in 1863, under a Church of England Emigration Scheme, to settle in Pakiri. Charles died on the 12th of Febuary,1933, in Avondale, Auckland and Sophie a few years later on the 17th of Febuary,1936, she was buried in Waikumete Cemetery.

Sophie and Charles’s known children are:

Charles Herbert Eyes. Charles was born on the 18th of April,1889 in Auckland. Charles worked as a Boat Builder before serving in WW1 with the 18th Reinforcements, J Company. Charles survived the war and married Evelyn Louisa Rose, on the 12th of March,1924.

Edward Amos Eyes. Edward was born in 1891 and married Margret May Holster in 1919.

Sophia Madaline Cochrane. Sophia was born in 1893, and married Fredrick Cuthbert Cochrane in 1921.

Maud Gertrude Eyes. Maud was born on the 19th of October,1894.

Fredrick John Eyes. Fredrick was born on the 14th of July,1897 in Hokianga, New Zealand. Fredrick served in WW1 with the 1st Battalion, Otago Regiment and died in France on the 8th of October, 1918. Fredrick is buried in Naves Cemetery in Northern France.

Percy Alexander Eyes. Percy was born on the 4th of August,1900 in Rawene, New Zealand.

Ziphoria Mabel Eyes. Ziphoria was born on the 29th of May,1902 in Rawene, New Zealand.

John Donovan was aged 25 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. John was from Dunmanway, Cork, Ireland, and born to Richard Donovan and Mary Ann Bryan. John was a ardent Catholic, but the local priests would not sign his immigration papers, John persuaded a Baptist priest to sign and so the Donovan’s came to NZ as protestants.

During the voyage on the Bombay, John narrowly escaped certain death when the mast and rigging came crashing down onto the deck during one of the severe gales. The family settled as part of the Waikato Immigration Scheme in the Williamson Clearing, later renamed Bombay. John died on the 21st of September,1916 and is buried in Pratt’s Road Cemetery Catholic in Ramarama near Bombay.

Alice Eliza Donovan (Maiden name Salter) was aged 24 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Alice was born in 1840 to Joseph Salter and Susannah Coghlan in Forehoe, Norfolk, England. Alice and John married on the 12th of Febuary,1861 at Saint Mary’s and Michael Catholic Church in East London. Alice and John will have one of the first baby boys born in Williamson Clearing, later renamed Bombay. Alice died on the 18th of August,1906 and is buried with her husband in Pratt’s Road Catholic Cemetery in Ramarama, near Bombay.

John and Alice’s known children are:

Ann Donovan. Ann also known as Nancy was born in 1862

Elizabeth Donovan. Elizabeth was born in 1863, but died shortly after arriving to Auckland.

Richard Donovan. Richard was born on the 14th of September,1866. Richard was a original team member of the 1888 Bombay Rugby squad.

Joseph Donovan. Joseph was born in 1870 and married Mary, Joseph died on the 1st of October,1906.

Alice Donovan. Alice was born in 1875.

Arthur Donovan. Arthur was born on the 26th of July,1876 and married Annie Martin in 1901.

Edmond Donovan. Edmond was born in 1878.

Agnes Donovan. Agnes was born in 1880 but died on the 9th of June,1890.

Louisa Donovan. Louisa was born in 1883.

Ann Donovan was aged 2 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Ann was also known as Nancy.

Elizabeth Donovan was aged 1 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Elizabeth died shortly after arriving to Auckland on the 14th of April,1865 in Onehunga.

Thomas Alfred Dudley was aged 21 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Thomas married Eliza Ann Moorecroft on the 14th of June,1871 in Thames, NZ.

Eliza passed on the 24th of December,1896 and Thomas on the 14 Sep,1923, both are buried at Aramoho Cemetery, Wanganui.
