Thomas Eaves was aged 23 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Thomas was born in 1841 in Preston, England, to Roger Eaves and Ann Bennett, and christened on the 2nd of June 1841 in Saint John’s Church in Preston. Thomas was already working in the cotton mills by ten years old, in the 1851 Census his occupation was listed as that of a Creeler, someone who winds thread onto bobbins, about a half of all Mill workers were on relief at the time.
Thomas married Ann L’anson in the same Church he was christened in on the 9th of November,1861, a few years later he was accepted as part of the Waikato Immigration Scheme and on arrival in New Zealand will become a farmer in the Williamson Clearing later renamed Bombay area.
Thomas kept a journal of the Bombay voyage.
After his wife Ann died in 1874, Thomas suffered depression and hanged himself in 1880 from a kitchen rafter at his home, his body was discovered by three of his children.

Ann Eaves (Maiden name I’anson) was aged 24 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Ann I’anson was born in Preston, England, in 1840 to William I’anson and Ann Spekeman, like her future husband Ann was christened in Saint John’s on the 3rd of July,1840. Ann’s father and grandfather worked as tin- plate workers. Ann’s parent died when she was young and Ann lived with two Aunts her were schoolteachers
Sadly, Ann died in 1874, leaving five children and a bereaved husband. It is reported she died during difficult child birth, the local doctor too inebriated to attend. The children were taken in by the local families. Edward went to stay with the Proude family.
Thomas and Ann’s known children are:

Ann Jane Waring. Ann was born in 1862 and married William Waring in 1884.
Mary Elizabeth Waring. Mary (Lizzie) was born on the 5th of July, 1863 and married Richard Waring, Williams younger brother in 1884. Mary had a dressmaking business in Coromandel , and had a nice girl working for her, she arranged for her younger brother Edward to visit for Christmas in 1896, that nice girl was Alice Forrest, his future wife.


Florence Henn. Florence (Florrie) was born on the 17th of November, 1866 and married Henry Rueben Henn on the 1st of August,1885. Henry died in 1897 and Florence remarried to William Henry Wild on the 5th of November,1904.

Edward Eaves. Edward was born in 1869 and married Alice Caroline Forrest. On Alice’s death in 1955, her family donated a 16ha forest north of Auckland to the nation, named Alice Eaves Scenic Reserve, trees include 300 year old Kauri.

Amelia Eaves. Amelia was born in 1871 and in later life returned to England.
Ann Jane Eaves was aged 2 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Ann was born in 1862 in Preston, England to Thomas Eaves and Ann I’anson, like her parents, Ann was christened in Saint John’s Church in Preston on the 1st of June,1862.
Ann married William on the 21st June,1884. William Waring was the second son of James Waring, and had travelled on the Ship Lancashire Witch, which was another ship tasked with taking Immigrants to the area, they will later, move to Melbourne, Australia before returning in 1894.

It should be noted that on the Bombay there was also a family named Waring, perhaps they were related?
Ann died in 1949, aged 87 years old and is buried with her husband in Papakura Old Cemetery, near Bombay.
Ann and William’s known children are:
Jamie Thomas Waring. Jamie was born on the 18th of June,1886 and married Stella Rose Marchant on the 10th of April,1911.
William Waring. William was born in 1887 and married Mabel Alice Wilson in 1910.
Edward Waring was born on the 10th of September,1892 and served in WW1. It is thought Edward was one of several members of the NZEF who were in Dublin during the Easter Rising in 1916, and requested to assist in the defense of Trinity College. Edward died on the 25th of November,1918 from Influenza at Papakura Hospital.

Daisy Alice Waring. Daisy was born in 1894 and married George William Bradley in 1918.

Amelia Waring. Amelia (Millie) was born in 1897.
Myrtle Waring. Myrtle was born in 1899.
Raymond Waring. Raymond was born on the 10th of January,1901 and married Marion Grace Craw in 1928.
Hazel May Waring. Hazel was born on the 1st of November,1903.
Mary Elizabeth Eaves was aged 1 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Mary was born in July,1863 in Preston, England, and was christened on the 5th of July,1863 in Saint John’s Church in Preston.
Mary only just survived the voyage on the Bombay, having suffered a great deal from sea-boils and other ailments, as many of the children did.
Mary married Richard Waring on the first of December,1884. Richard was the younger brother of William Waring (Who married her elder sister).

Mary died on the 15th of September,1950.

Alice Ann Waring. Alice was born on the 22nd of Febuary,1886 in Auckland, but died just nine years later.
Richard Waring. Richard was born on the 29th of June,1887 in Auckland, but died in Febuary,1888.
Edmund Waring. Edmund was born in 1888.
Sydney James Waring. Sydney was born on the 26th of December 1889 and married Constance Muriel Hart in 1922. Sydney served in WW1.
Unnamed. Baby was born and died on the 12th of March,1892.
Unnamed. Baby was born and died on the 16th of Febuary,1893.
Albert Edward Waring. Albert was born on the 31st of January,1901 and married Jessie McKay Bennie Chalmers in 1924, then Joyce Marie Taylor in 1955 in Australia.
Leslie Arnold Waring. Leslie was born in 1905.
William R Ecob was aged 21 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. No information is able to be found, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Eleanor Ecob was aged 19 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. No information is able to be found, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thomas H Edwards was aged 23 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. No information is able to be found, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
David Elder was aged 36 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.

David died on the 22nd of November,1881 and according to testimony left no will and had no immediate family.

Henry Evans was aged 35 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Henry was born in Langley, Sussex, England, in 1830 and christened on the 30th of May of the same year. Henry’s parents were James Evans and Elizabeth Elliot. Henry was the second eldest of 12 children, with his younger brother James also travelling on the Bombay with his family, another brother William also emigrated to New Zealand on the Ship Percy in 1866 with his wife Emma, several of his siblings moved to Michigan in the United States.
Henry was a gardener by trade, and will marry Harriet Prior in Portsea, Hampshire, England on the 8th of December,1862. Henry with family settled in Williamson Clearing, later renamed Bombay as part of the Waikato Immigration Scheme, receiving Lot 40.
Henry died on the 22nd of June,1893 and is buried at St Peters Church, Bombay.

Harriet Evans (Maiden name Prior) was aged 24 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Harriet was born in 1844 Sussex, England, and christened on the 3rd of March in Hartling, Sussex. Her father John Prior was a agricultural labour, while her mother Sarah Porter raised Harriet and her many siblings, her elder sister Jane Prior was also on the Bombay and will marry fellow passenger William Vince.
Harriet voted in the 1893 General Election, making her one of the first women to vote.
Harriet died on the 28th of November,1899 and is buried with her husband in Saint Peter’s Church, Bombay.

Henry and Harriet’s known children are:
Henry George Evans. Henry or Harry as he was known was born on the 6th of November,1863 in Southsea, Hampshire. Harry married Maria Magdalena Johansen on the 4th of March, 1891. Harry died in the Influenza Epidemic on the 4th of December,1918.

James Evans. James also known as Jim, was born on the 7th of May 1866 in Ramarama, near Bombay and married Margaret Boag on the 26th of July,1899.

John Evans. John also known as Jack was born in 1870 in Bombay and married Mary Evaline Hamilton Murray in 1919.

Harriet Evans. Harriet was born on the 27th of January,1876 in Bombay. Harriet married William Thomas Dazeley on the 20th of May,1899.

Sarah Ann Evans. Sarah was born on the 23rd of April,1879 in Bombay. Sarah married John Howard Lindsey.
Julia Landon. Julia was born on the 5th of March,1881 in Bombay and will marry Joseph Landon, the son of Bombay passengers William Landon and Harriet Wootten on the 14th of Febuary,1903.

Arthur Evans. Arthur was born on the 5th of July,1882 in Bombay, but died on the 21st of Febuary,1885.
Henry George Evans was aged 11 months old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Henry or Harry as he preferred was born in Southsea, Hampshire, England on the 6th of November,1863.
Harry was a market gardener and married Maria Magdalena Johansen on the 4th of March,1891 in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. Maria was of Norwegian descent.
Harry died on the 4th of December,1918 in Waipawa, Hawkes Bay, NZ from influenza. Maria lived until 13th of March,1955.

Harry and Maria’s known children are:
Henry John Evans. Henry was born on the 2nd of May,1893. Henry served in WW1 with the Wellington Infantry Battalion, B Company, on returning he married Ettie Louisa Crump on the 29th of March, 1922, but died the following year.

Arthur James Evans. Arthur was born on the 8th of June,1895. Arthur served in WW1 with the 2nd Battalion, Auckland Regiment but died in France on the 25th of Febuary,1917 from wounds while a POW.

Dorothy Julia Adams. Julia was born on the 8th of August,1897 and married Charles Edmund Adams, a butter maker in 1917 at Saint Andrew’s Church, Pukekohe, Charles was chosen in the ballot in May 1917 for the thirty first ballot.
David Evans. David was born on the 31st of December,1900 and married Agnes Norris in 1924.
Olive Lillian Evans. Olive was born on the 29th of June,1903.
Angelina Archdall. Angelina was born on the 31st of January,1906 and married Fred Harvey Archdall on the 8th of July,1939.
Mary Elizabeth Mitchell. Mary was born on the 30th of August,1907 and married John William Henry Mitchell in 1937.
Martha Rachael Harriet Douglas. Martha was born on 18th of October,1910 and married William Alfred Douglas in 1937.

James Evans was aged 32 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. James was born in 1832 in Hampshire and was christened on the 25th of November in Sussex. James is the younger brother of Henry Evans.
James was a gardener and seeds-man in England and married Elizabeth Bevis in 1862 in Portsea, Hampshire.

James and family came to New Zealand as part of the Waikato Immigration Scheme, and allocated LOT 47 in the Williamson Clearing area. After his wife and son died shortly after arriving in New Zealand, James left his daughter in the care of his brothers family and spent time in the Coromandel mining for gold, where he died on the 27th of January,1898, from influenza, his body was returned to his family and he was buried at St Peters Church in Bombay.

Elizabeth Evans (Maiden name Bevis) was aged 30 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Elizabeth Uttely Bevis and James were married in 1862 at Portsea, Hampshire. England,
Sadly Elizabeth died in 1865, soon after arriving to Auckland, at Drury.
James and Elizabeth’s known children are:
Emma Rau. Emma was born on the 21st of September,1862 in Portsmouth, England and married Carl Albert Franz Rau in 1898.
James William Evan. James was born in 1864, sadly like his mother dying shortly after arriving to New Zealand on the 3rd of April,1865 in Drury, from measles.
Emma Elizabeth Evans was aged 2 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Emma was born on the 22nd of November, 1862 in Southsea, Hampshire, England. With her mother and brother dying so shortly after arriving, Emma spent a good deal of her childhood with her uncle’s family, while her father spent much time away mining.

Emma married Carl Albert Franz Rau from Berlin, Germany in 1898 in Auckland. They had no children, but Carl or Charles as he preferred had several children from a previous marriage to Elizabeth Ann Martin, who died in 1897.

Carl died on the 10th of December,1944 and Emma on the 19th of April,1949 in Auckland.

James William Evans was aged 4 months old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. James was born in 1864, surviving the voyage, but will die shortly after arriving to New Zealand on the 3rd of April,1865 in Drury, Auckland from measles.
