Edward Fahey was aged 21 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Edward was born in Galway, Ireland, in 1843 to Patrick Fahey and Catherine Carew. Edward married Ellen McCormick in Liverpool on the 13th of September,1864 shortly before travelling to London and boarding the Bombay.
Edward came to New Zealand as part of the Waikato Immigration Scheme and will will settle in Williams Clearing, later renamed Bombay on the corner of present day Wootten and Chamberlin Road. The family home, a 6 bedroom property will be destroyed by fire in 1891. Fahey road in Bombay is named after the family.

Interestingly there was a family named Fahey living in nearby Ramarama, Margret Fahey was killed during the Waikato War on the 16th of October,1863 in that location, Margret and her husband John went out to milk their cows, when a Maori attack appeared and fired upon them. When found, Mrs Fahey was dead, and Mr Fahey, an old man who was an out-pensioner of Chelsea Hospital, expired shortly afterwards. It is not yet proven if they were related to Edward.
Edward died on the 15th of September,1913 and is buried at the Pukekohe Catholic Church.

Ellen Fahey (Maiden name McCormick) was aged 22 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Ellen was born in Galway, Ireland.
Ellen died on the 16th of July,1925 and is buried in Pukekohe.

James Hugh Fahey. James was born in 1865 and married Emily Florence McKay on the 18th of December,1895.

Stephen Patrick Fahey. Stephen or Patrick as he was known was born on the 11th of December,1870 and worked as a banker in Devonport. Stephen volunteered to serve in the Boer War, as a Private in the 6th Contingent, 16th Company of the NZ Mounted Rifles. It is believed Stephen divorced from a Kathleen Mabel in 1920.



Edward Joseph Fahey. Edward was born in 1873 and worked as a miner. Edward married Mary Jane Anderton (Mary’s parents also travelled on the Bombay) and served in the Boer War with the 5th and 9th NZ Contingent.

John Edward Fahey. John worked as a grocer.
Catherine Fahey.
William Fahey. William worked as a farmer in Bombay before serving in WW1 with the NZ Army. William was discharged due to illness, but survived until 1955.
Mary James. Mary married Ernest James on March the 27th,1896, Ernest was the son of Captain James of Devonport..

John Fearnley was aged 21 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. No information is able to be found, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Charles Flay was aged 25 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Charles was born on the 22nd of January,1841 in Cullompton, Devonshire, England. Charles was the eldest child of a large family to parents May Ann Clapp and William Flay, a farmer of 17 acres.
Charles married Mary White on the 27th of November,1860 in Exeter, England. Charles and family came to Williamson Clearing later renamed Bombay as part of the Waikato Immigration Scheme, and had been allocated land on the corner of present day Barber and Portsmouth Road’s.


After his wife died soon after arriving, Charles remarried on the 15th of April,1866 to Mary Ann Gee, Mary had arrived in June,1865 aboard the ship Lancashire Witch, another ship tasked with bringing emigrants to the area. Mary was born on the 20th of March,1851 in Sawston, Cambridgeshire to Thomas and Harriett Gee.
Charles and Mary will have several more children.

Charles died on the 9th of September,1919 and is buried in Saint Peter’s Church, Bombay. Flay Road in Bombay is named after the family.

Albert Charles Flay. Albert was born on the 18th of June,1867 in Williamson Clearing and married Sarah Mclean on the 6th of December,1890.
Henry John Flay. Henry was born on the 26th of September,1868 in Bombay. Henry married Margret Alice Thompson on the 17th of March,1892.
John Flay. John was born on the 17th of July,1870 in Bombay and married Emily Turchi on the 18th of August,1900. Emily was born in Livorno, Toscana, Italy.

Thomas Flay. Thomas was born on the 14th of July,1872 in Bombay and married Sarah Frances Clout on the 25th of May,1892.
William John Flay. William was born on the 26th of May,1874 and married Mary Ann Perry on the 10th of October,1894. Mary is the daughter of Bombay passenger Thomas Perry.

James Richard Flay. James was born on the 11th of April,1876 and married Agnes Martha Thompson on the 21st of January,1903.

Samuel Septimus Flay. Samuel was born on the 8th of May,1878 in Bombay and married Annie Helen Peters on the 22nd of January, 1907.

Ernest Richard Charles Flay. Ernest was born on the 20th of May, 1880 in Bombay and married Harriet Margret Gee on the 6th of April, 1904.
Fredrick Michael Flay. Fredrick was born on the 24th of November,1881 in Ararimu, South Auckland. Fredrick married Rebecca Amy Eunice Grimmer on the 14th of February,1902, then Elena Goatley on the 24th of October,1917.

Edwin Langford Flay. Edwin was born on the 22nd of August,1883 in Ararimu and married Marian Elizabeth Kemp on the 14th of July, 1906.
Mary Flay (Maiden name White) was aged 24 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Mary was born in 1840 in Chagford, Devonshire, England to James and Mary White and worked as a servant. Mary was heavily pregnant during the voyage of the Bombay, and died just a few weeks after arriving, along with her newly born baby from typhoid.
Mary is buried at Martins Farm, Williamson Clearing, now Bombay on the 29th of April,1865. Martins Farm at the time was a small clearing cut from a heavily wooded Puriri bush, and was the scene of several skirmishes during the NZ War, a year or two earlier.

Elizabeth Ann Balme. Elizabeth was born on the 13th of January,1862 and married George Herbert Balme on the 20th of Febuary,1879.
Herbert James Flay. Herbert was born on the 13th of June,1863 and married fellow Bombay passenger Helen Caie on the 9th of September,1885.
Not named. Born on the 29th of April,1865 but died shortly after.
Elizabeth Ann Flay was aged 2 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Elizabeth was born on the 13th of January 1862 in Cullompton, Devon, England. Elizabeth married George Hebert Balme on the 20th of February,1879. Elizabeth voted in the 1893 General Election, making her one of the first women to vote.
George was born in 1852 in Halifax, England and lived to the 19th of August,1903. George is buried at St Peter’s in Bombay. Elizabeth survived to the 27th of August,1941.

Hannah Holmes. Hannah was born on the 4th of Febuary,1880 and married Richard Holmes on the 15th of March,1905.
Mary Elizabeth Shaw. Mary was born on the 26th of January,1882 in Drury, South Auckland and married David Shaw on the 27th of March,1912 in Saint Peter’s Church.

George Herbert Balme. George was born in 1883 in Bombay and married Josephine Joyce Shaw, David Shaw’s younger sister in 1907.
Clara Helen Balme. Clara was born on the 2nd of March,1886.
John Balme. John was born in 1888, but died in a horse accident on the 12th of September,1896.
Percy Charles Balme. Percy was born on the 27th of May,1891 and married Myrtle Hilda Nash in 1923, after Myrtle died Percy remarried to Doris Eileen Brook Taylor in 1929. Percy served in WW1 at both Gallipoli and Western Front before being discharged in 1917 from injuries. Percy won a returned soldiers ballot for a parcel of land in Mangateparu, Morrinsville in the Waikato (Allotment 12)

Leslie James Balme. Leslie was born on the 6th of May,1895 and married Eva Minnie Carter in 1923. Leslie also served in WW1 with 26th Reinforcements, Auckland Infantry Regiment, A Company.
Eva Alice Laird. Eva was born in 1897 and married Lewis Laird in 1932.
Emmeline Joyce Balme. Emmeline died at just 8 months.
Herbert James Flay was aged 1 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Herbert was born in Spreyton, Devonshire, England on the 13th of June,1863. He will marry fellow Bombay passenger Helen Caie in 1885, Helen was just a few months old on the voyage.
Herbert became a successful breeder of draught horses, was involved in the local council and became a life long member of the Bombay Rugby Club.

After Helen died in 1904 Herbert remarried, he will die in 1936 at the Franklin Show from a kick of a horse.

John Clark Freeth was aged 28 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. John was born on the 1st of April,1835 in Birmingham, England to Job Freeth and Matilda Brown. John married Laura Kellow on the 1st of June,1857 in Saint Dunstan’s Church London.
John worked as a Brass Turner and Pump Maker and lived with his wife in Gloucester Street, Holborn, London.

After his wife Laura died in 1877, John married Mary Ellen Burrell in 1883. Mary was born on the 18th of December,1847 in Holbeach, Lincolnshire. John died on the 25th of September,1912 and Mary on the 7th of October,1929, both in Tauranga.

John and Mary had the following known children.
Harry Burrell Freeth. Harry was born in 1885 in Tauranga and married Catherine Leighton in 1911. Harry died on the 11th of November,1918 from Influenza.

Frank Burrell Freeth. Frank was born in 1886 in Tauranga but died just a year later on the 4th of July,1887.
Laura Mary Harpham. Laura was born in 1888 and married William Wadsley Harpham on the 1st of February,1918.
Edith Lucy Dromgool. Edith was born on the 16th of September,1892 and married James Charles Dromgool on the 11th of January,1911.

Laura Sophia Freeth (Maiden name Kellow) was aged 28 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Laura was born in Warminster, Wiltshire in 1836 to George and Martha Kellow. Laura died on the 9th of September,1877.
Laura and John had no known children.
