The family were fairly comfortable and even though his father died at a early age, his mother purchased for £208 three adjoining cottages a few doors down in The Chantry and converted them into a store with accommodation, of interest descendants will bake bread until 1957, being the last commercial bakers in Bromham. In the 1861 Census Ignatius is listed as a Baker.

In January,1873 Ignatius married Alice Reed and they would go one to farm on the North Shore of Auckland. Alice was half Maori, her mother being Te Kahumahinga, Kahumahinga was a first cousin to Te Rauparaha and grand daughter of Kimihia. Ignatius became a butcher in later life, and later still suffered from dementia, being admitted into hospital in 1916, a brief extract of his assessment states: “Patient is suffering from senile dementia. States his age to be 18, says he is unmarried and has no family (He is married and has nine children). Says he lives in Bromham, Wiltshire, England. Thinks his father and mother are alive and that the former is thirty and the latter 25 (both dead). He is disorientated for time and place; restless and wanders about in an aimless way stating that he must get along as he has business to transact up the road.”
