Julia Jamieson (Maiden name Unknown) was aged 23 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
John Jessup was aged 28 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. John was born in North Fleet, Kent, England in 1837. John’s father Edward was a Treenail and Wedge- maker for ship building, which John also learnt before joining the Royal Navy as a young adult, eventually serving as aide-de-camp to Commodore Edmonstone (Later to become Admiral) on the HMS Arrogant, which made several trips to Africa suppressing the slave trade.

The HMS Arrogant acted as flagship for the West African Squadron and Edmonstone as Commander in Chief. The ship engaged several slave trading ships and freed hundreds of slaves, returning them to the mainland. The Arrogant like many RN ships in the Squadron employed African men as sailors, tropical disease was rife and the native men called Kroomen had some natural immunity, three served with the ship named King George, King John, and the Prince of Wales (Musters of HMS Arrogant 1859-1862).

It was popular for the African Kroomen to adopt royal names, also popular was using alcoholic drinks as names like Bottle of Beer or Bottle of Brandy. Rankin, J. (2014). John left the RN as a Lieutenant and married Sarah Collins in Saint Andrews Church, Bethnal Green, London on the 6th of April,1863. They resided in Church Row, Bethnal Green before emigrating to New Zealand. John and Sarah will settle in Bombay and take up farming and John was given charge of the local Militia named the Razorback Rangers. John severed the local community including being elected on the first School Board Committee in 1872 and in later life returned to being a Shipwright.

John died on the 13th of June,1922 aged 85 years old, in Auckland at the residence of his daughter Annie Smith and is buried alongside his wife at Saint Peters Church, Bombay.

Sarah Ann Phillis Jessup (Maiden name Collins) was aged 28 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Sarah was born in London, England in 1837, the daughter of James Allston Collins, a Lighter-man operating Thames barges and Elizabeth Carter.
Sarah voted in the 1893 General Election, making her one of the first women in the world to vote. Sarah will live until the 7th of March, 1900 and will be buried next to her husband in St Peters, Bombay.

John and Sarah’s known children are:
Elizabeth Phillis Wootten. Elizabeth was born in 1866, making her the first baby girl to be born in Williamson Clearing, later renamed Bombay. Elizabeth married George Wootten on the 24th of September,1884. George had also travelled passenger on the Bombay as a young boy (Refer separate entry).
Elizabeth died on the 2nd of December,1936 in Great South Road, Ramarama, near Bombay and is buried with George at Saint Peters in Bombay.

Jane Wootten. Jane or Jennie as she was known was born in 1869 and married Robert Henry Wootten on the 2nd of Febuary,1893. Henry also traveled as a child on the Bombay and is the younger brother of George.

James Edward Jessup. James was born on the 26th of January,1872 but died on the 23rd of September,1873 in Drury near Bombay.
Sarah Rebekah Howie. Sarah was born in 1874 and married John Howie in 1916.
Annie Ellen Smith. Annie was born in 1876 and married Robert James Smith in 1903.
John Jessup. John was born in 1879 and will marry Helen (Nelly) Belmar Westray in 1910, Nelly was from Maryborough in Queensland. John a Carpenter and Nelly lived at 552 Mount Eden Road and died on the 12th of November,1918. Helen was the daughter of Captain John Westray and Ellen Lamont.

William Johnson was aged 49 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. William was born on the 23rd of March 1815 to George Johnson and Dorothy Gibson. William was the only son and with five sisters must have found times difficult when his father died in 1824 and his mother in 1852.
William’s father George was a Miner and had died in a gas explosion that killed 11 miners at the Newbottle Doreatha Pit Disaster on the 19th of November,1824. There had been a number of disasters already in the Pit, in 1815 alone a boiler burst killing 11 and a explosion 57.
William also worked as a Coal Miner and married Mary Hills on the 23rd of June,1834 at Houghton Le Springs, County Durham.


William died on the 11th of July,1894 at Waihi.
Mary Johnson (Maiden name Hills) was aged 49 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Mary was born on the 26th of December,1813 in Lancaster, Durham to Mark Hills and Mary Purvis.
Mary died on the 1st of Febuary,1889 in Huntly.

George remarried on the 2nd of May,1871 to Alice Helena Falkiner in Bulleen, Melbourne, Australia. Below is a interesting article written about Alice’s nephew George Frederick Falkiner, George’s father Charles was the younger brother of Alice and his mother was Moetu Taui. George served in the Australian army in WW1 and fought at Gallipoli and Passchendaele and was awarded a Military Medal and Bar.

‘On the night of 31st August,1916 in the operations north west of Pozieres, Corporal Falkiner went out to lay a telephone line. Finding the usual route impassable owing to mud and damage caused by shell fire, he went out alone and laid the wire in the open, regardless of the heavy shelling from the enemy. He successfully accomplished his work and kept his Battalion in communication at a most critical time. This N.C.O. has done consistently excellent work since the landing at ANZAC on 25th April,1915. – ‘Commonwealth Gazette’ No. 62- 19/04/1917 | Bar to Military Medal – ‘Is recommended for bravery, devotion to duty and skillful control of signal communications during operations near Zonnebeke on 26th September,1917. Though wounded before the attack commenced, he remained on duty, supervising stations, helping to run lines and doing all within his power to assure smooth working. On duty without ret or respite during the whole tour, out at all times under the heaviest barrage, he was an example and an inspiration to all. Elizabeth died on the voyage of the Bombay on the afternoon of 7th of Febuary,1865 after giving birth and then hemorrhaging, the baby survived, at location Latitude 46 S Longitude 64 E.

Thomas Johnson was aged 17 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Thomas was born on the 27th of June,1847 in Gumerston, Durham, and like his father and brothers worked as a Coal Miner in England. In New Zealand Thomas will end up being a Engine Driver in the Mines at Waihi.
Thomas married Honorah O’Connell on the 26th of Febuary,1872 in Thames. Honorah was from Templemore, Tipperary in Ireland to Michael and Johanna O’Connell. Honorah died on the 29th of January,1933 in Auckland, Thomas past on the 7th of July,1937 at his daughters residence at Studholme Street, Morrinsville.

Eliza was born in Nelson in 1855 to John Ellis and Caroline Williams. John and Caroline were from Glamorgan, Wales and emigrated in 1848 to New Zealand on the ship Bernicia. John was the first to discover gold and coal in the Collingwood area.

Robert died on the 29th of November,1921 at Williamson Street, Huntly and Eliza on the 25th of April,1941 at 2 Bassett Road, Remuera.

Percy Theodore Johnson. Percy was born on the 13th of August, 1890. Percy served in WW1 with the 20th Reinforcements, E Company (34377) and married Amelia May Hocking in London on the 15th of May,1919.

Elizabeth was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire on the 1st of April,1863 to Eliza and Henry Thomas Ware.

Andrew died on the 6th of August,1927 at 357 Childers Road, Gisborne and Elizabeth passed on the 21st of December,1942.

Charles was a Corporal with the 3rd Battalion (44278) but died in WW1 in France on the 29th of August,1918 at the Somme. Eva remarried to Leon Norbert Simon on the 28th of September,1920.

Ethel Caroline Hutchinson. Ethel was born on the 1st of October, 1887 and married Alexander Hutchinson on the 10th of August, 1910.

Wilfred Johnson. Wilfred was born on the 20th of January,1891 and married Mary Griffiths in 1920.

Grace May Sullivan. Grace was born on the 16th of July,1893 and married Martin Francis Sullivan. Martin’s father John was from Ireland and mother Mary from Australia, Martin served in WW1 with the Mounted Rifles (13/2926) before being sent back from active service being medically unfit from a variety of aliments, where he married Grace in 1917.

William Jones was aged 9 months old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
Thomas Jones was aged 40 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Thomas was born on the 8th of August,1824 in Portsea, Hampshire the only son to Thomas Jones and Elizabeth Schweickert.
Thomas Jones Senior was born about 1775 and fought in the Napoleonic Wars and was the 2nd Gunner on HMS Sceptre during the invasion of Guadalupe in 1810. and was awarded a Naval General Service Medal. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invasion_of_Guadeloupe_(1810) .
In 1810 Thomas Senior married Elizabeth at Saint Giles in Camberwell, London, Thomas served on the HMS Milford and Abundance and then the Princess Charlotte during the Egyptian-Ottoman War. In 1856 he had retired from the Navy and was living back in Camberwell.

Thomas Junior worked as a Cabinet Maker, Merchant Seaman and served in the Royal Navy on board HMS Conway, in 1861 Thomas was in Portsmouth Naval Base as a Carpenter who specializes in Scroll Work for the Royal Navy ships.
Thomas and Ann Traill had married on the 1st of January,1843, when Thomas left for sea the family moved to London and lived in Marylebone.

Thomas and family came on the Waikato Immigration Scheme and on arriving in Williamson Clearing, Thomas built a whare for the family, a plain, oblong log hut thatched with nikau palm fronds. At one end a huge fireplace lined with clay or rocks, with a small doorway at the side and with three walls plugged with moss with clay. Most of the whares were sited near bush streams, sparsely furnished, dirt floors and poorly lit. Water carried in tins for washing & bathing, a bath meant a squat & splash in a tin basin.
In 1868 Ann died and it was not until May 1870 that Thomas finally got his promised land from the Crown. Application number 712, Pokeno, 55 acres Register 123, Folio of Grant 258, Number of Schedule 268, Thomas quickly set about building a family home which he completed in December of that year, Thomas supplemented his income by Carpentry, Furniture-making, playing the violin and harmonica and teaching music. On the 1st of January,1873 Thomas went to Pokeno to play the violin at Mr Bathgate’s, where he played all night and received £1. On the 21st of January he went to Joseph Wootten’s for two and a half days working for 5/ each day including dinners to make a water trough and fix well gear.
Thomas remarried to Helen Waterhouse on the 31st of December,1874. Helen (Ellen) was from Preston, working as a Weaver and had been married to David Mayman a Engineer, David came to NZ at some stage and finding better prospects sent for Helen and there three children Elizabeth, Mathew and Margret to come join him on his farm at Razorback (Bombay), which they did arriving on the Caduceus in Febuary,1872, sadly David died in a terrible industrial accident the following month.

A subscription was raised by the Mill workers where David was working and others totaling about £62, which was used to assist Helen and her youngest daughter back to England on the same ship Caduceus, while her two eldest children Elizabeth and Mathew remained, one finding employment with a Mr J.B Russell. Helen and Margret return on the 26th of December,1874 on the Assaye, Thomas had written to her and met her on arrival, they were soon married on the 31st of December at the home of Reverend Thomas Norrie

In 1882 on the 2nd of November the family took a barge to Onehunga then ship New Plymouth and settled at Inglewood. Helen died from cancer on the 16th of Febuary,1897 and Thomas from Angina on the 18th of Febuary,1898 both at Inglewood in Taranaki, NZ.

Anne Jones (Maiden name Traill) was aged 41 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Ann as she preferred was born in Portsea, Hampshire to Andrew Traill and Mary King Padner on the 24th of December,1820. Her father Andrew was born in 1781 in Auchermuchty, Fife, Scotland and worked as a Millwright, Mary was born on the 1st of June,1783 in Portsea, Hampshire where Andrew met Mary and married on the 27th of July,1805.
Ann died just a few years after arriving to Williamson Clearing (Bombay) on the 31st of July,1868 from Cancer.

Elizabeth Jones. Elizabeth was born on the 10th of April,1850.

Alfred Jones. Alfred was born on the 3rd of October,1856 and married Carolina Zara Turchi on the 28th of May,1882.
Sarah Emma Harding. Sarah was born on the 22nd of January,1860 and married Charles Henry Harding on the 24th of September,1880.
Elizabeth Jones was aged 14 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Lizzie as she was known was born on the 10th of April,1850, in Portsea, Hampshire. Elizabeth worked as a Laundress and stayed with her father and mother, later step-mother and would appear did not marry.

Elizabeth died on the 8th of October,1909 at New Plymouth.

Thomas Henry Jones was aged 12 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Thomas was born in Portsea, Hampshire on the 25th of October,1854. Thomas married Louisa Santina Turchi on the 13th of January,1890 in Inglewood, Taranaki.

Louisa was born on the 14th of November,1867 in Livorno, Toscana, Italy to Carlo Vincenzio Giovanni Luigi Turchi and Santina Margherita Giannoni. Carlo and his large family first settled in Jackson Bay in the South Island, then caught the ship Stella to New Plymouth to find work and settle with other Italian and German immigrants, Carlo purchased government land at Block 6, Section 35.
Carlo had came with a Mr Federli who had played a pivotal role in the founding of the Australian wine industry and stayed in Hokitika to marry Meta Theresa Willberg and advising the NZ Government that vines, olives and mulberries could be grown successfully in the county. https://timespanner.blogspot.com/2009/03/


Thomas died on the 23rd of September,1924 at Mangapai, Whangerei from Influenza, Louisa passed on the 4th of April,1953.

Frank Jones. Frank was born on the 22nd of March,1892 and married Bertha Smedley on the 30th of October,1924.


Grace Violet Griffin. Grace was born on the 28th of May,1893 and married Frank Griffin on the 30th of March,1918.

Madeline Jessie Peters. Madeline was born on the 5th of December,1894 and married Allan Vincent Peters in 1933.

Juanita Constance Jones. Juanita was born on the 21st of November 1896, but died on the 22nd of December,1916 in Whangarei.

Mabel Ruth Penny. Mabel was born on the 14th of May,1898 and married Henry Penny on the 6th of November,1919.

Thomas Traill Claude Jones. Thomas was born on the 29th of August 1900.

Louisa Santina Cossill. Louisa was born on the 22nd of July,1902 and married Eric Andrew Cossill in 1924.

Jane Page Drake, Jane was born on the 28th of Oct,1907 and married Frederick John Drake in 1929.
Alfred Jones was aged 8 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Alf as he was known was born on the 3rd of October 1856 at Portsea, Hampshire. Alf joined the Waikato Militia Volunteers in 1874 and married Carolina Zara Turchi on the 28th of May,1882 at Kaimata, New Plymouth.
Carolina is the older sister of Louisa and was also born in Livorno, Italy on the first of March,1863. Louisa and her father as per the Newspaper report below accused Alfred of Lunacy, the case was dropped, she did however apply and was granted divorce in 1902, she went on the remarry in 1905 to Edward Easthope.

Alfred died on the 30th of June,1924 and is buried at Hillsborough Cemetery in Auckland, Carolina died on the 15th of November,1937 at Omaha, Auckland.

Francisco Jones. Francisco was born on the 15th of September,1883 and married Catherine Margaret Piggott on the 4th of Febuary,1904. Catherine is the daughter of James Piggott and Catherine Parker whose parents travelled on the Bombay.

Clarissa Jones. Clarissa was born on the 17th of August,1884 and married Alexander Wiggins in 1903.
Albert Victor Jones. Albert was born in 1886 and married Florence Collecutt on the 10th of Febuary,1909.
Emma Harriet Gilbert. Emma was born on the 12th of December 1887 and married Charles Ernest Reynolds Gilbert on the 24th of July,1907.
Lidia Lydia Adams. Lidia was born on the 13th of October,1890 and married Robert George Chalmers Adams in 1916.
