Hugh Mann was aged 28 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.

George Marshall was aged 28 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. George was born in Ashton Keynes, Wiltshire in 1839 to Richard Eelee Marshall and Jane Bossward. George married Maria Brownett on the 14th of August,1859 in Cheltenham, Gloucester, George’s occupation in the 1861 census was as a Gardner.

The Marshall family moved to Thames, NZ in the late 1860’s where George had a store on a half acre section, the store measured 24ft by 12ft and fetched £54 10s on sale when George died on the 6th of July,1899 in Waitekauri from a long illness.

Maria Marshall (Maiden name Brownett) was aged 23 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Maria was born on the 21st of May,1841 in Gloucestershire to Ann Miflen and John Brownett who was a Stonemason.

Maria married George on the 14th of August,1859 at Cheltenham.

Maria died 19th of July,1928 in Tarau, Thames, New Zealand.

Mary Ann Challis. Mary was born on the 28th of April,1860 and married Fredrick Challis on the 27th of June,1877.

Fanny Maria Marshall. Fanny was born on the 18th of September 1861, but died on the 8th of March,1863.

Hamalaer Jane Marshall. Emily as she preferred was born on the 26th of July,1863.

Henry John Marshall. Henry was born in 1868.

Edith Kate Brownett Henderson. Edith was born in 1870, and married Thomas Henderson on the 24th of September,1894.

Lillie Matilda McCollum. Lillie was born on the 20th of December 1872, and married Thomas Dauntless McCollum on the 21st of April, 1891.

Mary Ann Marshall was aged 4 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Polly as she preferred was born on the 28th of April,1860 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England, she will go on to marry Fredrick Challis.

Frederick was born on the 12th of October,1851 at 1 Morgan Street, London to William Henry Challis and Julia Stringer. William worked as a Porter, Milkman and Fishmonger. Julia died in 1857 and William remarried to Eliza Ellen Daley (Edwards) and soon after emigrated to NZ with Frederick, brother William and half sister Daley on the ship Oliver Lang, arriving Wellington on the 18th of September,1858.

Eliza died soon after arriving and William will marry a third time to Caroline Wiltshire (Fensham).

Mary and Fredrick were married on the 27th of June,1877 in Tararu, Thames. Fredrick Challis died on the 26th of April,1921, Maria died a few years later on the 7th of April,1925 at Thames Hospital, New Zealand aged 65.

Fredrick Challis. Fredrick was born on the 19th of March,1878 and married Alice Eva Raynes on the 3rd of March,1899. Alice died at a early age in 1913 and Fredrick died in the Influenza Pandemic on the 1st of December,1918.

Maria Edith Noakes. Maria was born on July 14th,1879, and married Albert John Noakes on the 22nd of April,1902.

Julia Ryan. Julia was born on the 8th of December,1880, and married Charles Phillip Ryan on the 7th of June,1906. Charles served in the Boer War (2443) with the NZ Mounted Rifles as a Corporal and in WW1 (41205) as a Captain.

Archibald Garnett Challis. Archie was born on the 25th of December 1882, and married Ethel Faithful Kaniers (McDowell) on the 18th of October,1916 in Queensland, Australia. Archie served in WW1 with the AIF (3334) with the 4th Pioneer Battalion.

George Marshall Challis. George was born on the 4th of September 1883, and married Violet May Roberts on the 10th of July,1908.

William Sydney Challis. William was born on the 6th of September 1884. William attempted several times to enlist in WW1 but was retired medically unfit during training (70153) when finally accepted.

Winifred Amy Thornton. Winifred was born on the 5th of April,1886, and married Ernest Richard Thornton on the 28th of May,1908.

Eveline Grace Bond. Eveline was born on the 13th of August,1887 and married William George Bond on the 20th of April,1911.

Alice Mary Gray. Alice was born on the 13th of February,1889 and married George Gray on the 13th of October,1909.

Phoebe Charlotte Ryan. Phoebe was born on the 3rd of April,1890 and married Charles Phillip Ryan on the 11th of August,1919 after her elder sister died in 1916.

Henry Gay Challis. Henry was born on the 29th of July,1891. Henry served in WW1 with the New Zealand Field Engineers as a Sapper in a Tunneling Company and married Margret Clark in 1934.

Charles James Challis. Charles was born on the 10th of November, 1892 but died on 10th of July,1893.

Caroline Lily Smith. Caroline was born on the 7th of April,1894 and married Robert James Smith on the 30th of July,1914.

Erick Alan Roy Challis. Erick was born on the 12th of November,1895 and married Edna Grace Robinson on the 12th of July,1921. Erick served in WW1 with the 1st Battalion of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade.

Frank Herbert Challis. Frank was born on the 15th of March,1898 and married Eleanor May Fitzpatrick in 1922. Eleanor died in 1933 and Frank remarried to Clara Cecelia McElwee.

Hamalaer Jane Emily Marshall was aged 1 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Hamalaer was born 26th of July, 1863, in Cheltenham, Gloucester. Hamalaer died on the 20th of November,1877 aged 14 and is buried at Tararu Cemetery in Thames.

Robert Charles Martin was aged 24 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Robert was born in Staines, Middlesex in 1840 to Margret Gibbons and James Francis Martin.

Robert had a older brother William, who as a young boy of 17 joined the Royal Navy and served on the Falcon, experiencing several engagements in the Baltic, when discharged from the Navy, William travelled on the Lord Wolseley to New Zealand, arriving to Port Chalmers in 1857.

Robert married Elizabeth Isabella Clark on the 1st of July,1860 in Bursledon, Hampshire, England. Robert and Elizabeth came to NZ as part of the Waikato Immigration Scheme.

At the request of his elder brother William, Robert will sell the Bombay farm and the family moved to Oamaru where Robert worked for 13 months in a Coal Pit before it collapsed and was then abandoned, they then moved to Thames and tried there luck at the goldfields, before returning back to Oamaru to work in a Quarry earning 12s-16s a day.

With a small nest egg accumulated from there earnings they returned back to Bombay to farm.

Robert died on the 12th of March,1892 in Drury and is buried at Saint Peter’s in Bombay.

Elizabeth Isabella Martin (Maiden name Clark) was aged 23 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Elizabeth was born on the 27th of August,1840 near Southampton. Elizabeth found work in the Pokeno Hotel, until she saved £20 which with the sale of there farm helped her and her husband move to Oamaru.

Elizabeth on her 90th birthday could still recall the voyage of the Bombay which still made her feel queer when she thought of those anxious time.

George Martin was aged 23 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. George became the first Postmaster in Bombay in December 1870.

Catherine Martin was aged 23 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.

George Martin was aged 2 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay Aged 2 years old.

Fairy Matson was aged 22 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.

DAILY SOUTHERN CROSS, VOLUME XXI, ISSUE 2394, 23 MARCH 1865, PAGE 1.

Joseph Mayo was aged 22 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Joseph was born on the 27th of March,1842 in Aynhoe, Bowberry, Northamptonshire and christened on the 12th of June. Josephs parents were Richard Mayo a butcher and Mary Tibbets.

Joseph did not follow his father as a butcher but instead worked in several notable plant nurseries supplying the Gentry, Joseph married Eliza Rowett shortly before departing on the Bombay on the 7th of November,1864 in Saint Catherine’s in Tranmere, Birkenhead Cheshire.

The Mayo family will have a Nursery in Drury but will eventually move down to Palmerston North where Joseph with his children opened another Nursery which will be held in high regard, in 1895 Joseph was appointed Government Pomologist.

Joseph moved back to Auckland died on the 5th of October,1917 and is buried at Waikaraka Cemetery in Onehunga.

Eliza Mayo (Maiden name Rowett) was aged 23 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Eliza was born on the 20th of December,1843 in Lincolnshire to George Rowett and Frances Leadbitter.

Eliza died on the 16th of June,1910 and is buried at Terrace End Cemetery in Palmerston North.

Alfred Richard Mayo. Alfred was born in 1867 in Bombay and married Annie Honeyford from Ramarama in 1892. Alfred died on the 10th of October,1911 while working on his farm in Aorangi.

Alice Mary Heerdegen . Alice was born on the 13th of August,1868 in Bombay and married Fredrick Heerdegen on the 28th of March,1893.

Fredrick’s nephew William George Murliss Heerdegen, Vicar of Bombay and Chaplain of St Stephen’s College will go on to write The Green Hill: Being the History of the Pioneers of Bombay, and the Ship which Gave the Settlement Its Name, in about 1940.

Fredrick William Mayo. Fredrick was born on the 31st of October, 1869 in Drury and married Edith Grace Ellis on the 7th of December, 1898.

Eliza Margret Giles. Eliza was born in 1875 and married John Giles on the 17th of June,1895, Eliza died on the 20th of April,1920 in Awahuri, Palmerston North,

Joseph George Mayo. Joseph was born on the 15th of May,1877 in Drury and married Esther Hannah Hepworth on the 24th of May,1899.

Barbara Amelia Littlejohn. Barbara was born on the 24th of September,1880 in Drury and married Robert Wilson Littlejohn on the 6th of February,1901.

Thomas Heseltine Mayo. Thomas was born on the 22nd of February, 1882 in Drury. Thomas died on the 14th of January,1902 after drowning in the Manawatu River.

May Maya Morell. May was born on the 3rd of September,1883 in Drury and married Arthur Ambrose Morrell on the 25th of August,1906.

Edward Millburn was aged 38 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Surname also spelt Milburn.

Edward died on the 14th of September,1897.

James Millburn was aged 13 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.

Rachael Moses (Maiden name not known) was aged 28 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.

Leah Moses (Maiden name not known) was aged 21 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.

John Mould was aged 20 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. John was born in Castle Bromwich, Warwickshire, England, to parents Thomas Mould and Hannah Hollick. Thomas Mould worked as a Grocer and Provision Dealer.

John’s younger sister Emma also emigrated to New Zealand on the 15th of April,1884 on the ship Rangitikei and will marry fellow passenger George Greenway, George was also from Warwick.

John married Maria Josephine Louisa Naughton on the 12th of February,1866 and they moved to Greymouth, in the South Island of New Zealand, Maria was born in 1845 in New South Wales, Australia to James Naughton and Maria Louisa Mitchell.

James Naughton was born in Castlehard, Dallyhouse, Ireland and enlisted in the British Army in 1833. He came to Hobart, Australia in 1844 as a guard on the Anson (a convict ship) with the 58th Regiment, then on to Sydney. James was promoted to Colour Sergeant (815) and by the time they came to New Zealand in 1846 James on the Bee and Maria on the Levant they already had several children.

Maria accompanied her husband in the Hutt and Whanganui Campaigns, and was at Boulcott’s Farm (now within the suburb of Epuni) near the Hutt River when it was attacked by Te Mamaku of Ngāti Haua-te-rangi of Whanganui and his men resulting in eight soldiers killed. The attackers broke into the farmhouse and mother Maria held her children close including young Maria crying “The picaninny! my picaninny!” (child) and the Maori left her alone. In the Whanganui campaign she witnessed close to hand the attack on the town and in 1847 tended the wounded at Saint John’s Wood.

James left the service in Auckland with a Meritorious Service Pension of £15 per annum after 21 years and 8 months and became Police Commissioner in 1861 until his retirement in 1870, later to become Resident Magistrate of Auckland. James died suddenly on 18 March,1871, aged 54 years and is buried in Symonds Street cemetery. Maria left Auckland on the death of her husband and returned to Sydney to live with her daughter.

Maria died on the 1st of June,1873, when giving birth to Emma Rose, it was reported there was a large funeral for her at Ahaura. John remarried to Eliza Morrow on 26th of August,1874.

Eliza was born in, Ireland to Margaret and John Morrow. Eliza immigrated to Australia and married Henry Ramsbottom in Sydney in 1866, and having a daughter Eliza Jane in 1868. At some point the family immigrated to New Zealand, where Henry died in 1874. Eliza passed away on the 25th of September,1896 aged 56 years, and is buried at the Maungaturoto Congregational Cemetery, Northland.

John remarried for a final time to Jane Ann Humphries in 1898. Jane was first married to Joseph Leech. John died on the 12th of September,1923 in Maungaturoto, Northland, aged 78, and is buried at the Maungaturoto Anglican Cemetery. Jane died on the 9th of Febuary,1927.

Elizabeth Jane Smith. Elizabeth was born in 1870 and married Arthur Smith on the 25th of December,1891.

Emma Rose Lundquist. Emma was born on 1st June,1873, sadly her mother Maria died while giving birth, Emma was adopted after birth by Mary and William Claughnesy, the owners of the Greymouth Hotel. Emma went on to marry Hugo Lundquist in 1902 then Thorvald Vilhelm Rasmussen in 1920.

John’s and Eliza’s children are:

John Albert William Mould. John was born in 1878, he married Emily Sarah Leech on the 24th of February,1904. Emily was formerly the wife of George Green and Fredrick Evans.

Andrew McShein was aged 24 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.

Suspect it is misspelt also listed as McSkein

Mary McShein (Maiden name not known) was aged 20 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.

George McMullen was aged 23 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.

Researching Notes: Confusingly a George McMullen also arrived a month later on the Dauntless, with that George being a bit of a rogue and had several run ins with law). Suspect George McMullen is related to James McMullen Dargaville (below: possible connection)
