James Robinson was aged 40 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. James was born on the 25th of November 1814 in Natland, Westmorland, England to Marry Berry and John Robinson.

It would appear James could not write, giving a mark for his signature.

James worked as a Agricultural Labourer and a Stone Cutter and married Annie on the 8th of November,1838 in Kendal.

James died on the 23rd of June,1882 in Bombay.

Annie Robinson (Maiden name Wilkinson) was aged 40 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.

Ann and James had two son’s who will travel later to New Zealand, also fellow passenger on the Bombay, Mary Agnes Blair is Ann and James’s daughter.

Mary Agnes Robinson. Mary was born in 1841 and married William Blair, they will also travel on the Bombay (refer separate entry).

James Berry Robinson. James was born on the 19th of October,1843 and married Bridget Theresa Burke in NZ on the 13 of March,1869.

Margret Bonner. Margret was born on the 2nd of April,1846 and married Ralph Bonner on the 20th of May,1866.

Leonard Wilkinson Robinson. Leonard was born on the 8th of May 1848 and married Susan Butler in NZ on the 18th of May,1872.

Sarah Jane O’Neil. Sarah was born on the 23rd of August,1852 and married Thomas O’Neil on the 4th of August,1869.

Jessie Wootten. Jessie was born on the 3rd of June,1861 and married fellow Bombay passenger Joseph Enoch Wootten on the 11th of May 1882.

Margret Robinson was aged 14 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Margret was born on the 2nd of April 1846 in Best Banks, in Kendal, England.

Margret married Ralph Bonner on the 20th of May,1866 in Bombay, Ralph with Margret’s father and her sisters husband Thomas O’Neil would travel to Thames in the 1870’s and try there luck during the gold rush, but eventually Ralph and Margret will move down to Taranaki.

Ralph died on the 19th of June,1901 and is buried at the Stratford Pioneer Cemetery in Taranaki. Margret died also in Stratford on the 11th of June,1916.

John Preston Bonner. John was born in 1867 and married Annie McQueen on the 18th of July,1893.

(It is thought John fought in the Boer War, possibly for Australia).

Annie Louisa McQueen. Annie was born in 1869 and married Duncan McQueen on the 6th of March,1893.

Mary Maude Bonner. Mary was born in 1871 but lived just 3 months.

William Ralph Bonner. William was born in 1872 and served in the Boer War (788) with the NZ Mounted Rifles, 3rd Contingent. William married Mary Josephine Mears on the 8th of October,1902.

Rhoda Kivell. Rhoda was born in 1875 and married Louis Kivell in 1897. Louis died in Thames on the 2nd of November,1889 and Rhoda remarried to Edward Francis Spray.

Helena Jessie Bonner. Jessie as she was known was born in 1878 but died accidently on the 23rd of January,1887, aged 9 years 6 months.

Ida Margret Huckstep. Ida was born in 1879 and married Henry Huckstep in 1902.

Agnes Beatrice Green. Agnes was born on the 10th of August,1881 and married Charles John Brighton Green in 1920.

Grace Ruth Toms. Grace was born on the 10th of May,1884 and married David Hall Toms on the 15th of July,1913.

Edmund Alfred Bonner. Edmond was born on the 2nd of July,1886 and served in WW1 with the 30th Reinforcements, H Company, NZ Rifle Brigade (60312)

Sarah Jane Robinson was aged 13 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Sarah was born in a street called Beast Banks in a house named Serpentine Cottage (still standing), on the 23rd of August,1852 in Kendal, Westmoreland, England.

Sarah’s father William owed a considerable debt to Thomas O’Neil, which was agreed to be cancelled upon marriage to Sarah. Sarah and Thomas married on the 4th of August,1869 in Bombay.

Thomas was from Ireland and served in the 65th Regiment arriving in NZ on the Lancaster Witch from Australia in July,1856 with a Detachment of 257 Officers and other Ranks

Thomas helped in the construction of the roads and redoubts in the area, later Thomas worked as a Gold-miner and was given a soldiers grant of fifty acres in Mill Road, Bombay.

It would appear Thomas could not write.

In 1872 gold was discovered in Thames and many of the Bombay residents including Thomas tried there luck, returning back on weekends. Sarah voted in the 1893 General election, making her one of the first women in the world to vote.

Thomas died on the 6th of December,1909 and Sarah on the 21st of July,1934. Both are buried at Saint Peters Church in Bombay.

Sarah and Thomas’s known children are:

James O’Neil. James was born on the 16th of April,1871 and married Emily Jane Burch on the 11th of Febuary,1900.

Emily was born in Burnley. Lancashire to Edward Burch and Harriet Youds and had came as a baby with her family to NZ on the Cartvale on the 10th of October,1874. It is reported 19 children died on the voyage from Measles and Diphtheria.

Isabella Pullen. Isabella was born on the 23rd of January,1873 and married William Thomas Pullen in 1910 in New South Wales.

Leonard William O’Neil. Leonard was born on the 21st of January 1875 and served in the Boer War with the New Zealand Mounted Rifles, 6th Contingent (3533). Leonard married Gertrude Holt in 1915.

Annie Margret Brewer. Annie was born on the 24th of April,1877 in Bombay and married Henry Tudor Brewer on the 8th of May,1901.

Bertram Oscar O’Neil. Bertie as he preferred to be called was born on the 24th of March,1880 and served in the Boer War with the New Zealand Mounted Rifles, 8th Contingent (9075).

Bertie returned from South Africa on the Britannic to Wellington, berthing on the 1st August,1902, a large number of servicemen on board were suffering from Measles and Pneumonia, Bertie was transferred to isolation on Somes Island, but died a short time later on the 2nd of August,1902. Bertie is buried at Saint Peter’s, Bombay.

Sarah Jane Walker. Sarah was born on the 18th of June,1882 in Bombay and married Richard Walker on the 11th of July,1901.

Thomas Lewis O’Neil. Thomas was born on the 28th of August,1884, and worked as a Farmer in the Bombay area. Thomas served in WW1 with the Auckland Mounted Rifles (13/113) spending almost five years aboard in the Middle East, Balkans and Europe, including being wounded at Gallipoli.

Thomas married Amy Evelyn Phoebe Reynolds in 1921.

May Bertha Lauer. Mary was born on the 13th of March,1888 and married Frederick Lauer in 1916.

William Harold O’Neil. William was born on the 13th of January,1891. William served in WW1 with the 23rd Reinforcements, Mounted Rifles. William caught Malaria and was discharged in 1919 (36012). William married Alice Elizabeth Donovan in 1920. Alice is the granddaughter of Bombay passengers John and Alice Donovan.

Alan O’Neil. Alan was born on the 19th of May,1893 and married Ruby Daphne Philips.

Phillip Vivian Roy O’Neil. Phillip was born on the 4th of November 1895. Philip served in WW1 as a Private with the 20th Reinforcements, Auckland Infantry Battalion, A Company (30840).

Phillip married Reremoana Kingi Paul in 1937. Reremoana was born in 1898 in Wairoa, Hawkes Bay to Te Whare Paora and Te Paera Kingi. Te Paera’s parents were Wiremu Tutahuarangi Haami Kingi and Mihiterinaerina Piopio. Wiremu’s parents were Mihiterinaerina Piopio and Wiremu Kingi, Principal Chief at Waitara Te Rangitake.

Eric Albert Raymond O’Neil. Eric was born on the 30th of September 1897, and worked as a Ploughman. Eric then served in WW1 with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 1st Battalion, 7th Reinforcements, E Company (23423).

Eric married Pepi Konuke Huka. Pepi was born in 1909 to Konuke Huka and Ani Horonga. Konuke’s parents were father Paraire Huka and mother Emere Taritari. Ani’s parents were mother Raiha Te Nehu and father Karaitiana Haronga.

Jessie Robinson was aged 3 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Jessie was born on the 3rd of June,1861 in Kendal, England and married fellow Bombay passenger Joseph Enoch Wootten on the 11th of May,1882.

Joseph died on the 6th of October,1903, and Jessie died on the 10th of November,1909, both in Bombay.

Jessie and Joseph’s known children are:

Frederick Joseph Wootten. Fredrick was born on the 14th of October, 1883 in Bombay. Fredrick was a farmer before serving in WW1 with the NZEF, 37th Reinforcements, C company (74260).

AUCKLAND STAR, VOLUME XLVIII, ISSUE 193, 14 AUGUST 1917, PAGE 2.

Frederick like many of the NZEF were stationed temporarily in Sling Camp in England, the camp just 24 miles from Bromham, where his father was born. Hundreds of NZEF Soldiers rioted in March,1919 causing £15,000 of damage and raiding the stores for alcohol and cigarettes.

It is not known if Frederick married.

Jessie Constance Wootten. Jessie was born on the 11th of June,1885 in Bombay. Jessie trained as a teacher and received special mentions in her Teachers Examination in Art, Agriculture and History. Jessie was a Trainee Teacher at Grafton School and appointed Mistress at Pokeno School (South of Bombay) in 1905.

It is not known if Jessie married.

Ada Williams. Annie as she was known was born on the 24th of July,1888 and married Herbert James Williams on the 2nd of November,1935. Hebert had previously been married to Dorothy May Jenkins, who died in 1926.

Una Wootten. Una was born on the 5th of July,1890 in Bombay and married Rowland Wootten in 1915. Rowland is the son of her Fathers’ half-brother Charles Wootten who also travelled on the Bombay.

Hazel Olive Evelyn Longshaw. Hazel was born on the 26th of December, 1896 in Bombay and married George Henry Longshaw on the 18th of August,1925.

George was born in 1884 in Galleys Bank, Kidsgrove, England and came with his family on the SS Waihora on the 1st of January,1900. George had first been married to Jane Emily Walton who died in 1913.

Raymond Enoch Wootten. Raymond was born on the 18th of August, 1903 and married Edna May Crump on the 22nd of June,1927.

Edna was born on the 4th of November,1906 and is the daughter of William Robert Crump and Annie Patterson Allison, Annie is the daughter of Bombay passengers David Burnie Allison and Helen Paterson. Edna is also the Aunt to the Kiwi icon John Barrie Crump MBE.

George Percival Rooke was aged 30 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. George was born in Guildford, Surrey, on the 9th of Febuary,1834 and Christened on the 16th of March in Albury to parents James Rooke and Sarah Edwards.

George worked as a Carpenter and Bridge-builder, including working on Brunel’s The Great Eastern. George and Esther Fullbrooke married only a short time before the departure of the voyage of the Bombay. They settled in the Williamson Clearing later renamed Bombay area on Lot 91, as part of the Waikato Immigration Scheme.

George changed his name from Rooke to Roke due to being often referred to as Rooks, which William found offensive. George and Esther’s children would be teased with a rhyme… “In the sky overhead… The Rooks cry craw-craw… On their way home to bed”

In 1869 the family moved to Thames which was experiencing a Gold rush at the time, but a few months later had moved back to the area.

George died on the 1st of November,1903 at Ararimu.

Esther Rooke (Maiden name Fullbrooke) was aged 22 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Esther was born on the 17th of December,1841 in Medenham, Buckinghamshire, and Christened on the 23rd of January,1842 to parents John Fullbrook a Carpenter, and Jane Cable a Seamstress.

Esther was a House Servant and married George on the 6th of March 1864 in Hammersmith, London, just a few months before departing to New Zealand.

Esther died from a Stroke on the 29th of August,1933 in Kawakawa, New Zealand aged 92. Esther kept her facilities right to the end, and could still remember the hardships of the early days in Bombay.

George and Esther’s known children are:

Clara Roke. Clara was born on the 23rd of June,1867 in Ramarama, but died in March,1869.

Felix Harry Roke. Harry as he was known was born on the 30th of March,1869 in Bombay and will marry Mary Elizabeth Sharp on the 25th of March,1903. Mary was born in 1872 and was the daughter of fellow Bombay passenger William Sharp.

Alfred Roke. Alfred was born on the 26th of July,1871 and married Grace Ethel Kent in 1895.

George Roke. George was born on the 8th of December,1873 but died on the 22nd of September,1891.

Edward Roke. Ted as he was known was born on the 30th of May 1876 and married Amy Loftus Lindsey on the 1st of July,1903.

Amy is the half sister of Eliza Sawyer and sister of Alice Buttimore, and Lucy Allison whose families they married into also travelled on the Bombay.

Arthur Roke. Arthur was born on the 8th of September,1877 but will drown as young men near Poverty Bay, Gisborne on the 31st of May, 1900.

William Rooke. William was born on the 2nd of November,1879. Tragically William also drowned with his older brother in Poverty Bay in 1900.

Annie Sharp. Annie was born on the 25th of April,1881 and married William Sharp on the 25th of March,1903. William was the son of fellow Bombay passenger William Sharp.
