William Sawyer was aged 40 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. William was born in 1823 in Camberwell, London and was Christened on the 2nd of Febuary at Saint Giles in Camberwell. Williams parents were Samuel Sawyer a Market gardener and Caroline Cole.

William worked as a Gardener and married Mary Ann Newman in Brighton, England on the 18th of August,1845. The family came as part of the Waikato Immigration Scheme and will settle on 80 acres in Bombay.

William died on the 30th of May,1905 and is buried at Saint Peters Church, Bombay next to Mary.


Mary Ann Mitchell Sawyer (Maiden name Newman) was aged 38 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Mary was born on the 20th of January,1825 in Broadwater, Sussex, England. Her parents were William and Elizabeth Newman.
Mary Ann voted in the 1893 General Election, making her one of the first women to vote.
Mary died on the 14th of August,1898, and is buried at St Peters Church, Bombay.

Kate Emma Carter. Kate was born on the 25th of November,1868 in Ramarama and married William Bragg Carter on the 20th of November,1890. William’s family had also travelled on the Bombay.
Harry Sawyer. Harry was born on the 15th of May,1871 and married Sarah Jane Brownhill in 1898.
William Sawyer was aged 18 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. William was born in Brighton, England in 1846 and Christened at Saint Peter’s Church in Brighton on the 20th of September.
William worked as a Under-groom in England.
William died on the 6th of October,1882 from Consumption.

Charles Sawyer was aged 16 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Charles was born on the 15th of September,1848 in North London.

Charles joined the 1st Division Armed Constabulary, but died 2nd of January,1869. He was killed in Ngatapa, East Cape aged 20 during the siege of Ngatapa Pa and Te Kooti during the end of the New Zealand War’s.

John Newman Sawyer was aged 13 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. John was born on the 8th of December 1850 in North London and Baptized on the 5th of January,1851.
John married fellow Bombay passenger Margret Ann Wilson on the 10th of December,1884. They settled in the Williamson Clearing, later renamed Bombay area on 80 acres and will have five daughters and two sons.
Margret died on the 16th of Febuary,1914 in Bombay and John on the 6th of July,1928 in Patey St, Auckland. Both are buried at St Peters Church, Bombay.

Mabel Wilson Sturgess. Mabel was born on the 11th of May,1884 and married Arthur William Sturgess on the 16th of December,1914.

Percy John Sawyer. Percy was born on the 13th of February,1886 and married Flossie Thomas on the 2nd of March,1916.

Charlotte Hollingsworth Peters. Charlotte was born on the 25th of September,1888 and married William Peters in 1911.
Violet Mary Evitt. Violet was born on the 7th of April,1890 and married Murray Evitt on the 10th of Febuary,1915.
Gladys Margret Madill. Gladys was born on the 8th of September 1891 and married Adam Madill on the 2nd of Febuary,1916.

Roy Newman Sawyer. Roy was born on the 22nd of March,1893 but died on the 3rd of June,1899.
Victoria Reina Jane Barber. Victoria was born on the 27th of May 1897 and married Archibald Robert Barber in 1920.

Elizabeth Caroline Sawyer was aged 11 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Elizabeth was born on the 6th of Febuary,1853 in Walthamstow, East London and Baptized on the 27th of March,1853 at Saint Mary’s.

Elizabeth married George Bennett Jones in 1870. George was from Limerick, Ireland and born on the 25th of March,1846 to George William Jones and Mary Anne Burnett.

George died on the 23rd of Febuary,1918 in Morrinsville.

Elizabeth on the 26th of August,1922 in Mount Eden and she is buried in Onehunga at Waikaraka Cemetery.

George’s father Pierre Michal Mitchelle was a Sailor from Normandy, France but Anglicized his name to Peter Mitchell. He married George’s mother in 1865 in Whangarei, a Hannah Maria Taylor.

Eva Caroline Jaques. Eva was born on the 15th of October,1877 and married Amos Henry Jaques a Printer in 1897.

Ernest George Jones. Ernest was born on the 19th of April,1879 and married Rennie Jessie Innes on the 23rd of April,1908.

Herbert Augustus Jones. Herbert was born in 1882 but died on the 26th of March,1887.

Florence Edith Flexman. Florence was born on the 17th of April,1884 and married James Ware Flexman on the 26th of February,1908.
Eden Harriett Sawyer was aged 9 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Eden was born on the 10th of April,1855 in Walthamstow and was Christened on the 6th of May,1855.

Eden married William Joyce a Constable on the 13th of July,1874. William is the son of James Joyce and Dinah Hunter of Drum Hill. County Armagh, Ireland. William came on the Ganges to New Zealand on the 12th of October,1863.

William had served for eleven years with Distinction with the Armed Constables when he married Eden, however as his Superior Officers had not granted permission he was dismissed from service, he was however reinstated.

William died on the 25th of September,1903 while arresting a drunk man, but with the death attributed to a Heart Condition. Eden moved to Kenyon Avenue, Mt Eden and died on the 2nd of November,1935.

James Stewart Joyce. James was born on the 6th of December,1874 and married Ethel Blanche Garrett in 1901.
William Sawyer Joyce. William was born in 1876 and served in the Royal NZ Artillery (839) from 1898 and receiving a Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1916, he died shortly after.

Leonard Valentine Joyce. Leonard was born in 1878 but died on the 10th of February,1898, aged 19.
Annie Barwell. Annie was born in 1880 and married Thomas Herbert Barwell on the 28th of September,1899.

Eden Harriett Brown. Eden was born in 1882 and married William Thomas Brown in 1908. William’s parents celebrated a Diamond Wedding in 1931.

Amie Elizabeth Joyce. Amie was born in 1883. Amie studied to be a Teacher.
May F Joyce. May was born in 1885. May studied to be a Teacher.
Henry Augustus Joyce. Henry was born on the 19th of September 1886. Henry served in WW1 with the 2nd Battalion, Auckland Infantry Regiment (44937) and married Marie de Beauvoir Clendon on the 10th of April 1922. Marie’s father was Edwin John Clendon JP, a well known Lawyer and founder of Clendon and Vollemare.
Eva Mary Ann Joyce. Eva was born in 1889.
Arthur Sawyer was aged 7 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Arthur was born in Edmonton, London, on the 19th of November,1857.

Arthur settled in Gisborne, New Zealand in 1876 and found work in Contracting for roads, in 1886 he commenced business as a Carter and Carrier, and had a Wool and Coal Yard, he also owned for a time the Royal Oak Hotel, Matawhero and was a active member of the Freemasons.
Arthur married Elizabeth Ardern from Thames on the 18th of July 1884.
Elizabeth died on the 31st of December,1915. Arthur remarried to Hannah Williams on the 29th of October,1921 in Napier, they did not have children and Arthur died on the 26th of October,1944.

Arthur John Sawyer. Arthur was born in 1885 and died in 1932.
Ivy Irene Davy. Ivy was born on the 5th of October,1886 and married Ivan Lawrence Davy in 1910.
Florence Maud Davy. Florence was born on the 29th of June,1888 and married Albert Ernest Davy on the 2nd of December,1908. Albert is the younger brother of Ivan.
Harold Joseph Sawyer. Harold was born on the 16th of Febuary,1890 and married Alva Doris Hawke on the 16th of Febuary,1916. Harold and Alva’s had a son Kenneth Allister Sawyer DFC, Kenneth flew Beaufighters and Mosquitos in WW2.

Caroline Sawyer was aged 5 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Caroline was born in 1860 in Beecham, Berkshire and was Christened on the 26th of August,1860.
Caroline did not survive the voyage of the Bombay, she died on the morning of January 22nd,1865 after being sick for 21 days, she was buried at sea that same day in the early evening.

Augusta Sawyer was aged 2 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Augusta was born in England on the 17th of December,1862. Augusta married Eliza Zealand Partington on the 25th of November,1886 in Bombay.

Eliza or Zealie as she was known was the daughter of a Publican/ Brewer named Edward Robert Partington, however her father died when she was just five, on the 24th of August,1867.

Her mother Eliza Jane Coulam then remarried on the 30th of June,1868 to Wright Lindsey. Wright was from Strubby, Lincolnshire, England and had came to NZ in 1862 as a Albertlander Settler, before settling in Paparata, New Zealand. Wright was very musical and played Organ and Harmonium.

When Eliza Jane died Zealie was raised by Wright and his second wife Jane Tredwell, they will go on to have a number of children and lived on Wright’s farm at Paparata named “Wellood”.
The Lindsey family has a strong connection to the Bombay, with Zealie’s half sisters marrying into the Roke, Allison and Buttimore families.
Augusta and Eliza moved to 15 Salisbury Road, Gisborne and were active members of the Salvation Army.

Augusta died on the 18th of May,1925 in Gisborne, New Zealand and Eliza on the 26th of March,1937, they are buried together.

Augustus William Sawyer. William as he was known was born in 1887 in Drury, and entered the Salvation Army in 1910, before marrying Matilda Rose Johnson in December,1913.


Charles Ernest Sawyer. Charles was born on the 3rd of December, 1888 and married Eva Lavinia Butcher in 1917.
Ella Olive Sawyer. Nellie as she was known was born in 1890, but died on the 4th of July,1894.
Edgar Jack Sawyer. Edgar was born on the 16th of September,1891 and served in WW1 with the 12th Reinforcements, Otago Infantry Battalion, D Company (12482) and married Gladys Elizabeth Way in 1922.

Zealie Aileen Barron. Zealie was born on the 18th of July,1894 and married James William Barron in 1922.
Fredrick Sawyer. Fredrick was born in 1896 but died aged 1 month, on the 12th of September.
Herbert Arthur Sawyer. Herbert was born on the 10th of March,1898. Herbert served in WW1 with the 9th Reinforcements, Wellington Mounted Rifles but died in France on the 21st of September,1916 from wounds.

Evelyn May Stevenson. Evelyn was born on the 14th of May,1900 and married Thomas McMurray Stevenson on the 25th of February,1920.
George Harold Sawyer. George was born on the 5th of April,1902 and married Annie Margret Paul on the 19th of July,1939.
Lillian Eva Johnson. Lillian was born in 1907 and married Percival Johnson on the 28th of December,1946.
William George Sharp was aged 18 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. George as he was known was born on the 26th of January 1838 in Middlesex, England. George will settle in the Williamson Clearing, later renamed Bombay area and farm.


George married Mary Rebecca Wootten on the 12th of December 1871. Mary was born on the 25th of Febuary,1841 in Bromham, Wiltshire and is the daughter of fellow Bombay passenger Joseph Wootten and his deceased wife Sarah Sanson. Mary had travelled on a later voyage to New Zealand.

George died on the 15th of March,1890 leaving Rebecca with a young family to raise, but with having extended family nearby would have helped. Rebecca voted in the 1893 General Election, making her one of the first women in the world to vote, she died on the 29th of July,1922. Both are buried at St Peter’s in Bombay.

William and Mary’s known children are:
Mary Elizabeth Roke. Mary was born on the 30th of July,1872 in Bombay. Mary voted in the 1893 General Election, making her one of the first women in the world to vote, and married Felix Harry Roke on the 30th of September 1902. Felix’s parents George and Esther Rooke had also travelled on the Bombay.

Sarah Jane Sharp. Sarah was born on the 16th of January,1875.
Henry George Sharp. Henry was born on the 19th of September,1876 in Bombay.
Alice Best. Alice was born on the 14th of January,1879 in Bombay and married Aaron Best in 1909.

William Sharp. William was born on the 4th of Febuary,1881 and married Annie Roke on the 25th of March,1903. Annie is the younger sister of Felix and whose parents George and Esther Rooke had also travelled on the Bombay.

Kate Piggott. Kate was born on the 11th of December,1883 and married Ernest Piggott on the 20th of February,1907.
Fredrick Smith was aged 19 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
Solomon Stockman was aged 37 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
Esther Stockman was aged 39 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
Caroline Stockman was aged 18 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
Mary Stockman was aged 10 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
Andrew Sturgeon was aged 41 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Andrew is from Ballynahinch, County Down, Ireland and married Helen Lennon in the Presbyterian Church in Killyleagh, County Down on the 18th of November,1838. Andrew and Helen escaped the hardship’s in Ireland and moved to Scotland where Andrew worked in the Coalmines in Muirkirk.


Andrew and family came to New Zealand under the Waikato Immigration Scheme and will settle in the Williamson Clearing, later renamed Bombay area. Like many of the settlers Andrew would travel to Thames when gold was discovered and he was also involved in local governance.

Andrew died in Papakura Tavern, Papakura, after returning from a Orange Possession in Auckland, on the 15th of July,1886.

Helen Sturgeon (Maiden name Lennon) was aged 39 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Ellen as she was known was born in County Down, Ireland.
Helen died on the 22nd of August,1892, she had suffered a fall the month previously breaking a arm and leg, she is buried in Bombay.

John Sturgeon. John was born on the 5th of January,1845 and married Catherine Esther Waugh on the 2nd of June,1894.

Mary Ann McClune. Mary was born in 1848 and married Robert McClune in 1874.

Elizabeth Fergusson. Elizabeth was born on the 30th of November 1856 and married Samuel Alexander Fergusson in 1872.
Margaret Parker. Margaret was born on the 8th of November,1856 and married fellow Bombay passenger John Henry Parker on the 25th of Febuary,1875.
William Andrew Sturgeon. William was born on the 22nd of November,1859 and married Matilda Maxwell in 1897.
John Sturgeon was aged 19 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. John was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1845, and baptised on the 5th of January,1846. John came from a mining family and settled in the Williamson Clearing, later renamed Bombay on ten acres under the Waikato Immigration Scheme, doing well he then went on to purchase 113 acres of bush in Paparata.

John served as a volunteer with the Razorback Rangers and Drury Light Horse and was a excellent marksman. During the Te Kooti scare he was one of the party who went to the Waikato.
John married Catherine Esther Waugh on the 2nd of June,1894. Catherine was born on the 15th of August,1871 in Bombay to Esther Smith and Christopher Waugh who were also fellow Bombay passengers. Catherine was first married to George Edward Riley, but it is not yet known what happened to George.
John died on the 14th of September,1920 in Paparata and Catherine remarried to George Edward Riley on the 17th of June,1958.

John and Catherine’s known children are.

Annie Elizabeth Riley Waugh. Annie was born on the 2nd of April 1890, Annie is the step daughter of John and the daughter of Catherine Waugh and George Edward Riley. Annie married Samuel Sidney Bowyer on the 31st of August,1911. Samuel died on the 27th of March,1916 and Annie remarried to Albert Spooner.

Ellen Mary Barker. Nellie as she was known was was born on the 3rd of August,1894 and married George Henry Barker on the 14th of Febuary,1910.

William John Sturgeon. William was born on the 28th of March,1896. William served in WW1 with the 39th Reinforcements, E Company (70558). William married Ellen Ivy Butler whose husband died in the War.

Georgina Esther Sturgeon. Georgina was born on the 8th of December,1898 and married Alfred William Dench on the 7th of January,1920.

James Christopher Lennan Sturgeon. James was born on the 28th of September,1900 and married Marjorie Peterson on the 28th of May 1938.

Alexandra Arabelle Ruth Curley. Alexandra was born in 1902 and married Nicholas Neale Curley in 1921.

Matilda Evelyn Sturgeon. Evelyn as she was known was born on the 28th of April,1905, but it is not yet confirmed who she married.

Louisa May Painton. Louisa was born in 1908 and married George Alexander Painton in 1936.
Mary Ann Sturgeon was aged 16 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Mary was born in 1848 in Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Mary was the second eldest child of Andrew and Ellen Sturgeon.

Although not known if it is still in existence, Mary kept a dairy of her voyage on the Bombay.

Mary married Robert McClune on New Years Eve,1874. Robert was born on the 30th of October,1845 in Belfast and had arrived in Auckland just after the Bombay on the 28th of March,1865 on the ship Louise. Successfully finding enough gold in Thames, Robert purchased 107 acres of land in Mercer, near Bombay. After clearing the bush, they started a flour mill, where present day Mill Road takes its name, later they turned to Dairy farming. The farm was named Grand View Farm.
Mary voted in the 1893 General Election, making her one of the first women in the world to vote and the couple will celebrate a Silver Wedding on 31st December,1899.

Robert died on the 8th of January,1910. Each year Mary would post a Memoriam up to her death on the 15th of August,1924, both are buried in Bombay.

Louise Ellen Warnock. Louise was born on the 4th of August,1875 and married Robert Warnock on the 26th of March,1917.

Margaret Alice Farquhar. Margret was born on the 22nd of July,1876 and married Hugh Ward Farquhar on the 2nd of January,1900.

Tottie Elizabeth Ingram. Tottie was born on the 26th of September 1877 and married Archibald Ingram 1908.
James Robert McClune. James was born on the 7th of September 1878 and married Aimee Stella Kay on the 15th of April,1911.

Amy Mary Purdie. Amy was born on the 11th of December,1879 and married Edmund Campbell Purdie on the 9th of April,1898.

John Andrew McClune. John was born on the 28th of December 1881 and married Alice Rebecca Adams in 1906.
Edith Sturgeon Warren. Edith was born on the 29th of January,1884 and married Clifford Douglas Warren on the 3rd of December,1917. Clifford acted as best man at Edith’s sisters wedding earlier in the year.
Hugh Frederick McClune. Hugh was born on the 4th of November 1885 and married Elsie Laura Coulthard in 1910. After Elise died in 1918 from Influenza Hugh remarried Ida Bithell in 1927. Hugh was Headmaster of Hokowhitu School in Palmerston North, and just like today would comment on classroom overcrowding, with several rooms having 80 odd pupils each. He would then become Headmaster at Nelson Central School.

Ethel Linda Cooper. Ethel was born on the 15th of August,1887 and married David Roy Cooper in 1907. Ethel died in 1910.

Joseph Stanley McClune. Joseph was born on the 9th of May,1891 and married Ivy Holliday Smith in 1915.
James Sturgeon was aged 14 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. James was born in Renfrewshire, Scotland in 1850.
James farmed in Bombay and is not thought to have any family. His Will only gives reference to his extended family.

James died on the 28th of June,1920.

Elizabeth Sturgeon was aged 11 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Elizabeth was born in New Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1853 and married Samuel Alexander Ferguson on the 27th of January,1872.

Samuel was born in Stirling, Scotland and was a Farmer in Pukekohe East. Samuel and Elizabeth owned and enjoyed playing Piano.

Samuel died on the 7th of November,1907 and Elizabeth on the 23rd of October,1922 and is buried in Bombay.

Elizabeth Ellen Ferguson. Elizabeth was born on the 13th of November,1881 but died on the 25th of August,1890.
Thomas Stewart Ferguson. Thomas was born on the 6th of Febuary 1888 and married Kathleen Myra Farmer on the 3rd of June,1914.
Ellen Elizabeth Neal Ferguson. Ellen was born on the 13th of January 1891. Possibly married Allan Kenneth Paterson on the 26th of June 1913.
Charles Percival Ferguson. Charles was born on the 26th of March 1897. Possibly married Violet Beatrice Lilley in 1935. Violet had previously been married to William Offwood.
Margret Sturgeon was aged 9 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Margret was born on the 8th of November 1856 in Kilwinning, North Ayrshire, Scotland.

Margret married fellow Bombay passenger John Henry Parker on the 25th of February,1875. John was from Bourne, Lincolnshire, England.
