John Bennett Tabb was aged 32 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. John was born on the 27th of February 1830 in Saint Mabyn, Cornwall to James Tabb and Mary Bennett.
John worked as a Journeyman Shoemaker and in 1862 he married Jane White. John and Jane moved to Opotiki where John continued Boot Making and had a shop on Church Street.


John died on the 1st of April,1906 in Opotiki, New Zealand.
Jane Tabb (Maiden name White) was aged 26 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Jane was born on the 23rd of June,1838 in Oxford, England to Thomas White and Lucy Davis.
After John’s death Jane moved to 35 Jervois Road, Ponsonby, Auckland.
Jane died on the 19th of February, 1924.
John and Jane’s known children are:
Annie Jane Tabb. Annie was born on the 29th of November,1871 in Auckland.
James Thomas Tabb. James was born on the 21st of May,1872 in Opotiki and married Maria Milne in 1895. Below is a photo of there son Walter who served in WW1 (26710).

Joseph George Tabb. Joseph was born on the 24th of May,1875 in Opotiki and married Maria Machay in 1899. Joseph served in WW1 as a Sapper with the Tunneling Corps (4/1314).

Gertrude Tabb. Gertrude was born on the 12th of November,1877 but died two years later, on the 15th of March,1879.
Elizabeth Flanagan. Elizabeth was born on the 23rd of April,1880 in Opotiki, and married John Cardiff Flanagan in 1904. Elizabeth died in 1905 after giving birth to her daughter Elizabeth Florence.
Thomas Taylor was aged 28 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
Note: Thomas and Esther Thomas lost all three children on the voyage of the Bombay, we can only hope and pray that they had good health and better fortune on arrival to New Zealand, however no information has yet to be found.
Esther Taylor (Maiden name unknown) was aged 25 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
No information is able to be found, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thomas Taylor was aged 5 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Thomas died on the voyage of the Bombay on the 24th of January,1865. Thomas had died from suffocation of the lungs, he had experienced being sick for several days beforehand and was buried at 6 pm of the same day.

George Taylor was aged 4 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. George died on the voyage of the Bombay on January 28th,1865, he died just a few day’s after his elder brother from suffocation of the lungs, George had been sick for five days previous.

Edward Taylor was aged 1 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Edward died on the voyage of the Bombay on January the 29th,1865, like his brothers he had died from suffocation of the lungs after being sick for six days.

Robert Hugh Thomas was aged 30 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Robert was born in 1834 and was as a Labourer and House-painter and married Margret Jane Williams in Anglesey, Wales in 1862.
Robert was Proprietor of the Kuranui Hotel on Tarau Road, Thames from 1873 to his death. The Hotel was popular with the miners finishing work due to the closeness of several mines.

Robert died on the 21st of March,1874 in Albury, New South Wales.

Margaret Jane Thomas (Maiden name Williams) was aged 28 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
Margaret was born in 1837 in Holyhead, Anglesey, to William and Ellinor Williams. Margret was pregnant on the voyage of the Bombay and gave birth on the 28th of January,1865 to a girl.

After her husband died in 1874 Margaret remarried to Hugh Robert Jones on the 21st of November,1876 in Hunua near Bombay.

Margaret died on the 23rd of December,1906 in Albury, New South Australia.

Margret Ann Wilkins. Margret (Listed as Mary on the ships records was born on the Bombay on the 28th of January,1865. Margret married Benjamin Wilkins on the 19th of October,1882 in Auckland.

Marie Leonora Drummond. Marie was born in 1867 and married John J Drummond in 1890 in Albury, NSW.

Elizabeth Austin. Beth as she was known was born in 1869 in Hokitika and married George Stanley Austin on the 30th of March,1893 in Albury, NSW.

Louisa Thomas. Louisa was born in 1871.

Hugh Thomas. Hugh was born in 1873. Possibly went aboard for work (asbestos?)
Margret Ann Thomas was born during the passage of the Bombay. Margret (Listed as Mary on the ships records was born on the Bombay on the 28th of January 1865 at Latitude 43.0 S and Longitude 20.54 E.

Margaret married Benjamin Wilkins on the 19th of October,1882 at the The Congregational Church in Beresford St, Auckland.

Benjamin was born in 1850 in Foleshill, Coventry to Builder Joseph Wilkins and Sophia Clewes. Benjamin came to NZ with his family on the Hannover on the 24th of September,1862 as Non-Conformists and worked in various trades including Gum-digging, Gold-digging and Flax-dressing, before entering the Timber industry with his brother in Waikoukou and Kaipara and finally settling with is family in Pongakawa.

Margaret died on the 6th of Febuary,1921 in Rotorua, and Benjamin on the 3rd of April.1923 in Auckland.


Margaret and Benjamin’s known children are:
Sophia Kate Marshall. Sophia was born on the 9th of March,1884 and married James Benjamin Marshall in November,1911 in Pongakawa.


Daisy Leonora Ryburn. Daisy was born on the 13th of Febuary,1886 in Helensville and married James John Ryburn on the 19th of April 1905 in Pongakawa.

Elsie Elizabeth Marshall. Elsie was born in 1887 in Helensville and married Walter Marshall in 1910. Walter is the younger brother of James Benjamin Marshall. Walter who was Manager of the Tauranga Dairy Association died from a protracted illness a few years later.


Hugh Benjamin Wilkins. Hugh was born on the 6th of September 1889 and married Florence Amelia Jenkins in 1916.

Thomas Owen Wilkins. Thomas was born on the 4th of September,1891 in Hellensville and married Mary Aileen on the 5th of Febuary,1913 in Paengaroa.

Marcus Austin Wilkins. Marcus was married on the 24th of July,1896 and married Urania Miriam Grigg in 1925.

Albert Drummond Wilkins. Albert was born on the 31st of May,1898 in Tauranga. Note requiring further investigation, military records states (89502) that Albert did not know his mother or father, but does state Margret Ann Thomas as next of kin when enlisting in WW1. Albert also had prior military experience with the 4th Waikato Militia.

Richard John Tregoweth was aged 25 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Richard was born on the 28th of November 1838 in Kenwyn, Cornwall to Elizabeth Crago and John Tregoweth who worked as a Miner and later Mine Agent. Richard is the older brother of fellow Bombay passenger William Tregoweth. In 1851 Richard with his younger siblings were living in Duloe, Cornwall, it was not known where the parents were, although his father is recorded as passing in 1856.

Richard married Christina Nichols on the 23rd of December,1860 in Saint George’s Church, Truro, Cornwall. Richard worked for the Cornwall Railway Company, and when he left to travel to new Zealand was presented with a large family bible.
The family settled in Williamson Clearing, later renamed Bombay, then moved to Thames, New Zealand. William and John’s younger sister Elizabeth Ann Crago Tregoweth immigrated to new Zealand on the ship Chile on the 4th of December,1871 and will marry a William Moore on the 10th of August,1873 in Thames.

After Richard’s wife Christina died in 1866, Richard was left with two young daughters but will marry Harriette Jackson in Thames, on the 17th of August,1871.

Harriet Jackson was from Davidstown, Kildare, Ireland and born on the 25th of April,1848, to Protestants Elizabeth Browne and Samuel Jackson, after her parents died Harriet with her sister Ellen travelled to New Zealand on the ship Armstrong arriving on the 17th of Febuary,1865.

Richard worked in the mines in Thames, but in later life moved to Mercer where he had purchased land and gave time to Local Boards and Authorities. Richard died on the 11th of November,1918 in Otahuhu, and Harriet on the 14th of Febuary,1944 in Remuera, Auckland.

Albert Jackson Tregoweth. Albert was born on the 5th of June,1872 and married Frances Elizabeth White in 1896.

Reginald Fredrick Tregoweth. Reginald was born on the 4th of August,1873 in Thames, and married Gertrude May Kent, they had two sons before Gertrude died on the 29th of October,1902 and Reginald in 1916.

Mabel Elizabeth Kelly. Mabel was born on the 24th of August,1875 and married Adrian Kelly on the 30th of October,1901.
Harold Richard Tregoweth. Harold was born on the 29th of November,1877 in Thames and married Ellen O’Donnell on the 25th of Febuary,1906 in Nelson.

William Tregoweth. William was born on the 14th of August,1879. William served in WW1 with the 25th Reinforcements, E Company (48587) and married Eva Lillian Gibbs on the 14th of Febuary,1923.

Francis Vivian Tregoweth. Francis was born on the 25th of May,1882 and married Emily (Nellie )Ellen Young on the 13th of June,1917.

Harriet Lillian Milliard. Harriet was born on the 17th of September, 1884 and married William Owen Millard on the 16th of November 1910.

Christina Tregoweth (Maiden name Nicholls) was aged 24 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Christina was born on the 6th of October,1840 in Truro, Cornwall to Charles and Mary Nicholls.
Mary died soon after arriving in New Zealand on the 10th of November,1866 in Tuakau.

Richard and Christina’s known children are:
Mary Elizabeth Nichols Tregoweth. Mary was born and died in 1861 in Truro, Cornwall but died in 1862.
Emmiline Andrew. Emmiline was born in 1862 in Truro, Cornwall, and married Robert Andrew on the 28th of Febuary,1883.
Mary Coad. Polly as she was known was born on the 10th of December,1863 in Truro, Cornwall, and married John Hollow Coad on the 2nd of October,1887.
Emmeline Tregoweth was aged 2 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Emmeline was born in Saint George’s, Truro, Cornwall, in 1862 but was christened on the 15th of May,1864, in Saint George’s Church in Truro, most likely in preparation for the voyage on the Bombay in a few months time.

Emmeline will marry Robert Andrew in Thames, New Zealand on the 28th of February,1883 in Thames. Robert was born in Bayswater, on the North Shore of Auckland on the 3rd of June,1859 to John Andrew and Mary Ann Andrew. The Andrew family originated from Cornwall with his father being a Miner who also worked in the Copper Mines in Great Barrier Island when he came to NZ.

At some stage the family moved to Wellington where Robert was employed in the Railways and lived at 40A Wright Street.
Robert died on the 4th of December,1917 and Emmeline on the 6th of January,1922, both are buried in Karori, Wellington.

Rowena Bicknell. Rowena was also born on the 16th of December 1883 and married a English Seaman… Samuel Ernest Bicknell on the 18th of April,1917.
Robert Leslie Andrew. Robert was born in December,1883 and married Amy Rosalind Edwards on the 3rd of July,1912.
Charles Thomas Andrew. Charles was born on the 25th of August 1885 in Gisborne and married Lilly Magdalene Anderson in 1914, Lilly died in 1951 and Charles remarried to Lillian Alberta Petersen. Charles enlisted in WW1 but had a heart issue.
Ellen Christina Schwass. Ellen was born in 1887 and married Joseph Carl Schwass in 1915. Carl was born in 1870 in Nelson. Ellen divorced Carl in 1939.
Norman Coad Andrew. Norman was born in 1889 in Te Aroha and served in WW1 as a Sergeant with the 3rd Reinforcements, 3rd Battalion, G Company (12111). Norman married Florence Inglis in 1929.
Frank Percy Andrew. Frank was born on the 19th of April,1891, Frank was a Marine Engineer and served in the Merchant Navy before enlisting with the 35th Reinforcements, B Company (63535) and fighting on land in WW1. Frank married Anna Marie Hansine Jensen on the 23rd of July,1925. Anna was born in Copenhagen, Denmark on the 18th of October,1895.

The couple sailed to America on the ship Aoramoi in 1927 and settled in Mount Scott, Oregon, United States in 1927 and Frank would become Engineer Inspector at Kaiser Ship Building Yard, in Portland, Oregon

Richard John Andrew. Richard was born in 1894 but died in July,1903 in Thames.
Jessie Emmeline Ohlsson. Jessie was born in 1895 in Thames and married Oliver Andrew Ohlsson on the 27th of December,1922.
Mabel Eunice Andrew. Mabel was born in 1901. Mabel had a occupation working for the Land and Tax Department and died in 1945.
Bertha Candace Davis. Bertha was born on the 4th of May,1903 in Thames and married Fredrick Arnold Davis in 1930.
Arthur Malcolm Andrew. Arthur was born in 1908, but died on the 26th of August,1910.
Mary Polly Tregoweth was aged 8 months old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Mary was born on the 10th of December 1863 in Truro, Cornwall and Christened on the 15th of May,1864 at Saint George’s, Truro.

Mary married John Hollow Coad on the 2nd of October,1887 in Thames. John was born in 1858 in Redruth, Cornwall. The family lived in Thames and in later life Carters Road, Oratia, West Auckland.
Mary died in 1900 on the 23rd of November and John on the 21st of March,1939.
Mary and John’s known children are:
Emmeline Patterson. Emmeline was born on the 22nd of July,1888 and married Edward James Herd Patterson in 1912.
Catherine Dukering. Catherine was born on the 24th of April,1891 and married Claude Fredrick Dukering in 1911.
William Ernest Coad. William was born on the 21st of May,1894. William served in WW1 as a Private in the Auckland Infantry Regiment, however while on active service got ill, and died.

William Crago Tregoweth was aged 14 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. William, or Billy as he preferred was born in Liskard, Cornwall, England, on the 23rd of November 1849 to John Tregoweth and Elizabeth Crago. William is the younger brother of Richard Tregoweth.
William’s parents married on the 27th of August 1838 in Kenwyn, Cornwall. His father worked as a miner for Lead and died on the 22nd of September,1856, and his mother Elizabeth died on the 8th of September 1870, she had died in the Union Workhouse, in St Clement ,Cornwall, England.

When aged 16, William left Bombay and travelled to Thames, New Zealand and worked for the Prince Albert Crushing Mill, then he tried his luck gold prospecting, where he will later found the Sylvia Mine. William prospected around the country and was a pioneer of the Waihi and Karangahake Goldfields.
William died in 1908, being found dead in his miners hut in Karangahake. William never married. His obituary read, “Mining promoters are proverbially sanguine, but “Billy,” as everybody called him, was one of the most optimistic members of the fraternity who ever operated on the Hauraki Peninsula. Had he been less sanguine and more speculative he might have died a rich man…. But “Billy’s” geese were always swans to his eyes, and by his over-estimates of the value of mining propositions he lost several opportunities of making profitable deals.”


William Turpin was aged 36 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
William and Ann married in Lambeth, London on the 16th of October,1856.
William settled in Williamson Clearing, later renamed Bombay and farmed on Lot 33 and 36 on Portsmouth Road in Bombay, however William died from accidental gunshot wounds when hunting pheasants on the 21st of May,1874.

Ann Turpin was aged 34 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
William and Ann had no children and after her husband died, Ann married Fredrick Taylor. Fredrick was the Keeper of the Public Pound in Bombay, from 1879 to 1895. Ann voted in the 1893 General Election, making her one of the first women in the world to vote.
