William Vince was aged 31 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. William was born on the 15th of March,1833 at Kings Somborne, Hampshire. William was a widower but met and married fellow Bombay passenger Jane Prior on the 3rd of April 1866, in the Congregational Church in Albert Street, Auckland.

Jane was travelling on the Bombay with her sister Harriet Evans. William and Jane settled and farmed in Bombay. William a gardener established a orchard growing a wide range of fruits including peaches, plums and grapes, as well as farming wheat, oats, barley and maize. He also play cricket for the local team.

William and Jane celebrated a Golden Wedding in 1916 but he died a year later on the 1st of October,1917.

Thomas Waring was aged 32 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Thomas was born in Preston, England in 1832 to Farmer John Waring and Catherine Baldwin.
Thomas married Ann Wilson in Walton-le-Dale on the 9th of January 1860 and they lived at No. 3 Thomas Street, Fishwick, Preston where Thomas worked as a Weaver.

It should be noted that a James Waring with Alice, Edmond, William, Richard and Alice arrived on the Lancashire Witch shortly after the Bombay on the 2nd of June,1865 and that they also settled in the area, it is very likely although not yet proven that there is a connection between the families. James then went on to the Goldmines in Thames and was once manager of the Flying Cloud Mine: More Research is required.
After Ann died in 1865, Thomas remarried to Sarah Maule on the 19th of November,1872. The marriage would appear not to have been the happiest as reported below.

Thomas died on the 29th of November,1892 at Remuera, Auckland after a long illness.

Ann Waring (Maiden name Wilson) was aged 31 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Ann was born in 1833 in Walton-le-Dale, Lancashire, England to George Wilson and Ellen Whittle. in the 1851 Census George was Forman to the Cotton Manager.
Sadly it would appear Ann died died shortly after arriving to New Zealand in Drury, near Williamson Clearing on the 18th of August,1865 from Dysentery, leaving Thomas with the young children.

Agnes Mary Wilson Clark. Agnes was born on the 18th of March 1860 and married Archibald Hugh Clark on the 17th of July,1879.
Rose Waring. Rose was born in 1861 and married Edwin James Riddell in 1884 (TBC).
Benedict Stephen Waring. Stephen as he was known was born in 1863 and married Mary Ann Rayner also known as Ellen.
John Waring. John was born shortly after arriving but died a few months later on the 6th of December,1865.
Agnes Mary Wilson Waring was aged 4 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Agnes was born on the 18th of March,1860 in Fishwick, Preston, England to Thomas Waring and Ann Wilson.

Agnes married Archibald Hugh Clark on the 17th of July,1879 at the Katikati Junction Hotel in the Bay of Plenty, which Archibald had built the previous year.

Archibald was born in Tasmania, Australia on the 8th of September 1845 to Captain Hugh Clark and Jane Jean McArtney. Archie’s parents and sister Ann drowned on the 28 July,1857. The Brigantine Helen was blown onto rocks at Pitt Island off New Zealand mainland by a fierce gale, with the loss of eight souls and sister Ann’s dog.



It is thought Archie was a Corporal in the 2nd Waikato Regiment and received the New Zealand War Medal.

Archibald lived until the 19th of October,1918 and Agnes until the 15th of September,1936, both are buried in Waihi Cemetery, Waihi, New Zealand.

Eva Jane Rose Nicholson. Eva was born on the 5th of July,1880 in Katikati, NZ and married Archibald Nicholson on the 22nd of January,1903. Eva died on the 17th of November,1918 from Influenza.

Norman Clark. Norman was born on the 9th of August,1882 in Katikati and married Ann Maud Cunliffe on the 20th of May,1903 then Josephine Abraham Abbott on the 31st of July,1918.

Ernest Archibald Clark. Ernest was born on the 28th of September 1884 in Katikati, and married Evelyn Alberta Adams on the 3rd of April,1911.

Cuthbert Stafford Wilson Clark. Cuthbert was born on the 28th of June,1886 in Katikati and married Ireine Moore on the 23rd of November,1909.
James David Clark. James David Clark was born on the 20th of December,1888 in Katikati. James served in WW1 as a Corporal with the 36th Reinforcements, A Company (54639), later marrying Rachael May Smith on the 2nd of September,1923 in Guildford, England.

Hilda Margret Beatrice Clark. Hilda was born in 1891 but died on the 19th of August,1892.
Malcom Clark. Malcolm was born on the 20th of April,1893 but died a month later.

Benedict Stephen Waring was aged 1 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Stephen as he was known was born in 1863 and married Mary Ann Rayner also known as Ellen in 1894.
Ellen had been born in Taita, Hutt Valley to Benjamin Raynor and Ellen Hooper on the 3rd of September,1873.

Stephen and Ellen resided in Wellington where he worked as a Barber and Tobacconist.
Stephen died on the 12th of May,1935 and Ellen on the 3rd of April 1956.

William Stephen Waring. William was born on the 10th of June,1895 and served in WW1 with the 19th Reinforcements, New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade (17546). William married Sarah Ann Virgo on the 12th of December,1929.

Mary Ellen Ann Potts. Mary was born on the 6th of December,1897 and married Bertram Potts on the 31st of May,1920.

Rose Kathleen Waring. Rose was born on the 11th of December,1898.
Ruby May Waring. Ruby was born on the 16th of August,1899.
Alfred Waring. Alfred was born on the 23rd of August,1901 and married Beatrice Elena Presow in 1930.
Christopher Waugh was aged 26 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Christopher was born in Penrith, Cumberland, in 1838, to George and Ann Waugh and came from a Mining family.

Christopher married Esther Smith on the 4th of March,1862 in Auckland, County Durham.
The Waugh family will settle in Williamson Clearing, later renamed Bombay on ten acres as part of the Waikato Immigration Scheme, doing well they subsequently purchased a additional 71 acres in Paparata.

Christopher took considerable interest in educational matters, and served on the local school committee for a long duration.

Christopher died on the 16th of July,1895 after a lingering illness.

Esther Clark Waugh (Maiden name Smith) was aged 25 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Esther was born in Wetheral, Cumberland, England on the 27th of March,1840, to Walton Smith and Margret Ruddick.

Esther married Christopher in 4th March 1862 in Parish of Saint Andrew, County Durham.

Esther died in Bombay on the 23rd of May,1915.

George Walton Waugh. George was born in 1863 in Auckland, County Durham, England. George died in 1887 in Riverton, Otago from Bronchitis.
Margret Ann Gardner. Margret was born in 1865 and married a Cabman, John William Gardner on the 25th of November,1889.

Walton Waugh. Walton or Walter was born in 1867 and married Amelia Wilhelmina Dey in 1888.
William George Waugh. William was born on the 4th of August,1869 in Bombay and married Sarah Wootten on the 3rd of August,1898. Sarah is the daughter of Bombay passenger Charles Wootten and Ellen Anderton whose brothers also travelled on the Bombay.

Catherine Esther Sturgeon. Catherine was born on the 15th of August 1871 and married Bombay passenger John Sturgeon on the 2nd of June,1894.

Mary Jane Gurnick. Mary was born on the 3rd of October,1873 and married Wilhelm Friedrich Otto Gurnick on the 17th of November 1894. Wilhelm was born in Rugen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Germany. Wilhelm was convicted for Larceny.


John Waugh. John was born on the 7th of September,1875 and married Anna Matilda Manning on the 6th of September,1902. Anna’s family were from Germany.

Christopher Waugh. Christopher was born on the 4th of April,1878 and died on the 17th of November,1896 from Influenza.
Esther Elizabeth Smith. Esther was born on the 4th of April,1878 and married James Fraser Smith in 1909.
Thomas Smith Waugh. Thomas was born On the 10th of November, 1880. Thomas served in WW1 in the Field Artillery as a Driver (13/2950), but died on his return on the 2nd of December,1918 of Influenza.

George Walton Waugh was aged 1 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. George was born in Auckland, County Durham, England in 1863.
Note: It is thought that George died in 1887 in Riverton, Otago from Bronchitis, however more verification is required.

John Webber was aged 21 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
Michael White was aged 28 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
Ellen White was aged 27 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
Amelia White was aged 1 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
Joseph Whitworth was aged 36 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Joseph was born to William Whitworth and Deborah Beddard and married Emma Sampson in Ashton-Under- Lyne on the 24th of May,1861.

Joseph died on the 6th of November,1900 in Ponsonby, Auckland.

Emma Whitworth (Maiden name Sampson) was aged 26 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Emma was born in Ashton-Under-Lyne in Lancashire, England on the 7th of September 1838 to Betty Leech and Joseph Sampson.

Emma was by the age of nine working in the Cotton-Mills. However Emma learnt to be a Midwife and when she Emigrated was the only one in the Bombay area (Possibly the only trained midwife in NZ at that time) devoting over 50 years of service to the pioneer wives, only announcing retirement in her 70th then 80th year.

Emma lived until 95, dying on the 22nd of September,1932 in Avondale, Auckland. Emma is buried with her husband in Waikumete Cemetery.

Joseph and Emma’s known children are:
Sampson Whitworth. Sampson was born on the 27th of September 1866 in Ramarama and married Florence White in 1896.
Note: Florence was born in London, England and it is not known if she is connected to the above White family
Elizabeth Hannah Waugh. Elizabeth was born on the 4th of June 1870 and married James Waugh on the 11th of March,1890 in Russell, Northland.

Emma Louisa Allan. Emma was born on the 24th of May,1873 and married Andrew Tait Walker Allan on the 28th of November,1894.
Dorette Edgcumbe. Dora as she was known was the adopted daughter of Joseph and Emma.

Dora was born on the 2nd of November,1880 in Parnell out of wedlock to Sarah Maria Winck and Edward Mortimer Edgcumbe youngest son of Admiral George Edgcumbe 3rd Earl of Mt Edgcumbe and Lady Fanny Lucy Frances Louisa Shelley Countess of Mt. Edgcumbe. Edward was owner of the Bay of Plenty Times and Waikato Times Newspapers, held the Rank of Lieutenant in the New Zealand Militia and was married to Constance Bevin Burrows. Edward’s grandson Edward Piers Edgcumbe was the 7th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe.
Dora married Ignacious Manuel Soares on the 17th of November,1898. Ignacious also known as Innes was of Portugal descent.

Martha Wiggington was aged 18 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
Note: Possibly spelt as Wigginton.
John Wilkinson was aged 38 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
It would appear John and Agnes returned to Canterbury, England where they both passed.

Agnes Wilkinson was aged 37 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
Joseph Williams was aged 37 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
Sarah Williams was aged 36 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
Ann Williams was aged 14 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
Ann married fellow Bombay passenger Henry Golding (Refer separate entry) soon after arriving at Williamson Clearing on August 28th,1865, later renamed Bombay, by the Reverend T Norrie.
John Williams was aged 15 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
Richard Williams was aged 10 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
Mary Williams was aged 7 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
James Williams was aged 5 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
Thomas Wills was aged 23 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Thomas was born in 1840 in Exeter, Devon to George Reed Wills and Charlotte Page.

Thomas married fellow Bombay passenger Drusilla Wreford shortly after arriving in Auckland on the 18th of June,1865, in Saint Peters Church, Onehunga. Thomas had first travelled to Australia in the 1853 on the Barque Lima, of Dundee as a Apprentice, on arrival to Adelaide the crew deserted to the Goldfields and Thomas went to Sydney and joined the Mounted Police, after some time Thomas returned to England on the Steamer Lady Jocelyn.

Thomas opened a Boot Shop in Onehunga, then after a few years brought a fleet of boats and operated between Onehunga and Waiuku, before finally settling on on a farm at Awitu.

Thomas lived until the 22nd of August,1920 and is buried at Waikaraka Cemetery in Onehunga with his wife, who lived until 13th of June,1934.

John Wilson was aged 30 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. John was born in 1832 at Rathfriland, Down, Northern Ireland to Joseph Wilson and Margret McAnary.

John served in the Crimea War fighting with the 6th Inniskilling Calvary Regiment, in which he held the rank of Sergeant. John survived the War and married Sarah Hollingsworth on the 6th of July,1857 at Drumath, County Down.

John came as part of the Waikato Immigration Scheme and settled in Williamson Clearing later to be renamed Bombay, John played a active part in the community and served on several Boards and Committees.

John died on the 10th of March,1905 and is buried in Bombay Presbyterian Church.

Sarah Wilson (Maiden name Hollingsworth) was aged 35 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Sarah was born in Rathfriland, County Down, Northern Island, Sarah’s father was John Hollingsworth esq and Mary Ann Sheridan.

Sarah voted in the 1893 General Election making her one of the first women in the world to vote.
Sarah died on the 24th of April,1910 and is buried alongside her husband at the Bombay Presbyterian Church.

John and Sarah’s known children are:
Margret Sawyer. Margret was born on the 4th of January,1862 and married Bombay passenger John Sawyer on the 10th of December 1884.
John Wilson. John was born on the 26th of August,1864.
Sarah Jane Ross. Sarah was born in 1870 and married Graham Thomas Norrie Ross in 1897.
Mary Agnes Wilson. Mary was born on the 6th of October,1882.
Margret Ann Wilson was aged 3 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Margret was born in Liverpool on the 17th March,1862, Margret married fellow Bombay passenger John Newman Sawyer on the 10th of December,1884. (Refer Separate entry for Sawyer family).
They settled in the Williamson Clearing, later renamed Bombay area on 80 acres and will have five daughters and two sons.
Margret died on the 16th of Febuary,1914 in Bombay and John on the 6th of July,1928 in Patey St, Auckland. Both are buried at St Peters Church, Bombay.

Mabel Wilson Sturgess. Mabel was born on the 11th of May,1884 and married Arthur William Sturgess on the 16th of December,1914.

Percy John Sawyer. Percy was born on the 13th of February,1886 and married Flossie Thomas on the 2nd of March,1916.

Charlotte Hollingsworth Peters. Charlotte was born on the 25th of September,1888 and married William Peters in 1911.
Violet Mary Evitt. Violet was born on the 7th of April,1890 and married Murray Evitt on the 10th of Febuary,1915.
Gladys Margret Madill. Gladys was born on the 8th of September 1891 and married Adam Madill on the 2nd of Febuary,1916.

Roy Newman Sawyer. Roy was born on the 22nd of March,1893 but died on the 3rd of June,1899.
Victoria Reina Jane Barber. Victoria was born on the 27th of May 1897 and married Archibald Robert Barber in 1920.

John Wilson was aged 3 months old at time of registering passage for the Bombay.
John was born on the 26th of August,1864.
George Henry Winter was aged 23 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. George was born in 1841 in Tiverton, Devon to Robert Winter and Ann Brewer. George was a Blacksmith and went under his maiden name of Brewer after he arrived in New Zealand.


George married Susan Arthurs in 1862 in Tiverton, but she died soon after arriving to New Zealand. George remarried Isabella Logan on the 18th of August,1866, and moved to Kawakawa, besides being a Blacksmith George was for a time Publican of the Star Hotel.

Isabella Logan who was born in Tyrone, Ireland in 1846 to Esther Megahey and John Logan. George and Isabella will go on to have a number of children.

Isabella died on the 26th of May,1909 in View Road, Mt Eden, George moved into his daughters house at 10 Mckelvie St, Grey Lynn and died on the 20th of January,1921.

Isabella Logan Stewart. Isabella was born on the 16th of November,1868 in Thames and married Thomas Dauntless Stewart in 1888. Thomas was born at sea on the Dauntless on the 6th of March,1865.


John Brewer. John was born in 1869 in Auckland and married Margaret MacKay on the 7th of September,1898 in Kawakawa.


Ann Letitia Logan Fabian. Ann was born in 1873 in Auckland and married Fredrich Francis Fabian on Febuary the 7th,1898.

George Henry Brewer. George was born on the 4th of July,1878 in Kawakawa.


To be investigated: George married Clara Jane Hoskins who died on the 26th of April,1909 in Wanganui, George then remarried Althea Muriel Bowern later that year on the 4th of October.



Eleanor Thomas. Nellie as she was known was born in 1880 and married Ernest Charles Thomas in 1907 who was a Tailor.

Mary Florence Guerin. Florie as she was known was born in 1883 and married Dennis Guerin in 1918.

Elizabeth Gwendoline Hill. Elizabeth was born in 1885 and married a Coachbuilder named Clarence Lovel Hill on the 24th of December 1908.


Doreen Melba Mansell. Doreen was born on the 11th of June,1903 in Kawakawa and married Seon James Mansell on the 17th of December,1932.
Doreen was the daughter of John Brewer but was possibly raised by his parents.

Susan Winter (Maiden name Arthurs) was aged 21 years old at time of registering passage for the Bombay. Susan was born in 1843 in Cruwys Morchard, Devon to Harriett Vickery and Peter Arthurs.
Susan died soon after arriving into New Zealand around 1866.

Arthur Peter Winter. Arthur was born in 1863 in Tiverton and married Eliza Jane Griffiths in 1885.
Ann Winter. Ann was born shortly before boarding the Bombay in the last quarter of 1864.
