Memories from Ancestry: “A small woman with an eager active mind, a keen sense of humour, and a sparkle in her eyes (which were hidden behind thick glasses, most of her life). She crushed her leg as a girl, when running over a raft of Kauri logs, (which were floated down the Northern Wairoa river). Her father resisted all attempts to amputate and took her to a specialist in Auckland, where, over a long period, he removed shards of bone, etc from her leg and managed to save it. She had a slightly dicky heart for the rest of her life after this and a limp (surprise, surprise!). An inverterate “pack rack”, she collected NZ stamps, among other things and had a long life of service to others. I don’t know if she had a fiancé – probably – he was probably one of those whose photo was amongst those that adorned the front hall of Herbert Road  – most of whom did not return. When she died, it took my mother and Monica a week to clear out her room – what a treasure trove that was – most of the family photos I have were retrieved from a sack that was going to the tip!!! A lovely lady who was usually remembered with pleasure if tempered with a little occasional frustration, by those who knew her!” John Liddle

Memory from Ancestry recalls: “Herman became a boarder after WW1. Everyone assumed Herman and Helen would marry, but they never did. He had the room across the hall from Helen. It was always assumed it was because he liked a tipple – he certainly had a bulbous red nose in later years. He was the secretary to Sir Earnest Davies. There are persistent rumors of a miscarriage from the early 1930’s. Aunty Barbara certainly reckoned so from the “kerfuffle” at Herbert Rd when she was staying there as a kid.” Dinah also died at Herbert Road, on the 8th of June,1965.

Clark – MM citation London Gazette, 28 January,1918, p1405, Rec No 1612:During operation Belle Vue Spur near Passchendaele on 12th October,1917, Sapper Clark went forward with 2nd Brigade Forward Station Party about midnight. Under shellfire they wended their way towards the front line. At daylight they were met by heavy machine gun and shellfire. Sapper Clark was twice knocked down by concussion and debris but carried on as most of the party had been knocked out. He was eventually the only visual man left, but set up station at Waterloo House. Without cover, he got “through” to Abraham’s heights and transmitted messages.
