What is the connection to the ship Bombay and Sir Edmund Hilary?
A young girl of nine years old named Harriet Wooderson is the answer!
Harriet was travelling on the Bombay with her family on the 1864 voyage. A London girl born and raised in London, it must of been a either fantastic adventure to board a ship and travel around the world to a new land, or a horrible nightmare. I suspect she was a strong character and embraced the challenges. In 1881, she met George Clark, quickly falling in love they married and had several children, one of them was named Gertrude.

Gertrude was born in 1892 and she too will prosper and had work as a teacher. Gertrude will go on to marry Percival Augustus Hillary. Percival had served in the First World War and was allocated land as a returning serviceman near Tuakau, which is coincidentally next door to Bombay, where he took up honey making… and if you are not aware Gertrude and Percival are the parents of Sir Edmund Hillary.
